Moersdorf sets school record in triple jump
Eugene, Ore. – Anneke Moersdorf set a school record in the triple jump on Saturday to conclude a spectacular weekend at the Oregon Relays at Hayward Field.
Competing in the event outdoors for the first time this season, the junior from San Luis Obispo posted a mark of 40-8.25, breaking Michele Turney's former record almost eight inches and taking second place. Turney's standard of 40-0.75 had stood since 2014. Three of her six attempts broke Turney's record; she also recorded marks of 40-6.25 and 40-3.25.
Moersdorf also shattered her former PR of 39-11.25, set in Eugene in 2021. She was No. 2 on the all-time list before Saturday.
It was her second outstanding performance of the two-day meet. On Friday, she won the long jump in 19-8.25, the No. 5 all-time performance at OSU and a PR by almost five inches. She was No. 9 on the all-time list at 19-3.50, set last weekend in Long Beach, Calif.
The 1600 relay foursome of Taylor Weidinger, Paige Sefried, Jada Hurley and Mari Friedman took second in 3:47.82, the No. 2 all-time performance. It just missed erasing the school record of 3:47.40, set in 1980 and the oldest school standard of events customarily held.
The third of the Saturday's four top-10 performances came from redshirt freshman Jade Whitfield in the hammer. She placed eighth in 164-5, a PR by more than six feet and the No. 8 mark in OSU history.
Finally, freshman Isabelle Esler threw 153-05 in the javelin and improved her No. 6 all-time mark and PR, which was 151-8 before Saturday. She took third place.
Friedman also placed third in the invitational 800 in 2:07.65. Senior Emma Nelson took third in the high jump at 5-7.
Redshirt senior Keely McLaughlin was fourth in the shot put (49-11.75) and sixth in the hammer (175-6).
Moersdorf was the second Beaver to set a school record at the meet. On Friday, redshirt junior Grace Fetherstonhaugh shaved almost four seconds off the 3000-meter steeplechase mark and placed second in 9:44.76, just .02 seconds behind the winner.
Her former PR was 9:50.40 and was the No. 2 time in school history before Friday. The old record was 9:48.30, set by redshirt junior Kaylee Mitchell at last year's Pacific-12 Conference championships. Mitchell placed fourth in 9:53.67.
Outdoors, Fetherstonhaugh also holds the OSU records in the 1500 (4:17.25) and 5000 (15:58.93), and ranks ninth in the 800 (2:11.17). She is also the record-holder in the indoor 5000 (16:00.93), and second in the indoor 3000 (9:00.87).
Adael Scatena sped to second place in the 400 hurdles in 1:01.41, a PR by nearly a second and the No. 6 time in school history. Weidinger was third in 1:03.17.
The Beavers totaled seven all-time top-10 marks: two by Moersdorf and one each from Esler, Whitfield, Fetherstonhaugh, Scatena and the 1600 relay.
The Beavers will host their annual High Performance Meet on April 29-30 at the Whyte Track & Field Complex.
Field events start at 10 a.m. Friday with the women's hammer. The first track event is the women's 200 at 1 p.m.; the final event is the 10K, at 9:55 p.m.
Saturday's action starts at 11 a.m. with the women's javelin. Saturday's track events begin at 2:30 p.m. with the women's 400 relay. The men's 1600 relay concludes the meet at 5:10 p.m.
