Apr 23, 2022

CORVALLIS, Ore. – No. 20 Oregon State (31-14, 7-10 Pac-12) dropped its fifth straight one-loss game on Saturday afternoon to the hands of No. 4 UCLA. The Bruins plated three runs in the fourth to clinch the weekend series at Kelly Field.

Freshman Sarah Haendiges struck out seven in 4.2 innings of work, suffering her fifth loss of the season and is now 10-5 on the year. Senior Mariah Mazon pitched the final 2.1 frames, dealing three strikeouts and didn't allow a single Bruin hit.

Oregon State's offense got started early, breaking through in the first to take the early 1-0 advantage. Freshman Kiki Escobar collected her 60th hit of the season to leadoff the Beavers. Junior Frankie Hammoude connected on an RBI single to left just two batters later. With the bases loaded and two outs, the UCLA starting pitcher ended the inning with a strikeout.

After two scoreless frames, UCLA's offense heated up in the top of the fourth to plate three runs off four hits.

Savanah Whatley delivered a one-out single in the fifth but the Beavers were unable to make anything of it. Mazon homered in the sixth, pulling the Orange & Black within one at 3-2, for her first hit in conference play.

UCLA's starter struck out the Beaver side in the bottom of the seventh.

As a team, Oregon State scattered five hits from five different Beavers while Hammoude and Mazon added the RBIs.

The Beavers and Bruins are back one more time tomorrow at 12 p.m. PT for the series finale. The game will be available on the Pac-12 Networks.
