Running Backs Score Three TDs In Second Scrimmage

Apr 23, 2022
Damien Moore was one of three Cal running backs to score touchdowns on Saturday in Cal's scrimmage.

BERKELEY – All three of Cal's touchdowns in Saturday's second spring football scrimmage came from running backs with Damien Moore and Jaydn Ott catching scoring passes while DeCarlos Brooks ran for one. Dario Longhetto put up 10 points by draining all three of his field goal attempts from 50, 34 and 53 yards, while adding an extra point on the lone PAT tried by the Golden Bears.

After the defense held the offense scoreless on its first three drives, Longhetto put the offense on the board by making a 50-yarder to cap the fourth drive and then added a 34-yarder to close out the first of three 11-on-11 "play the game" team sessions.

All three offensive touchdowns came in the second 11-on-11 period with Jack Plummer finding Moore for an eight-yard touchdown followed by a 34-yard scoring strike from Kai Millner to Ott before Brooks' ran the final touchdown of the scrimmage in from 24 yards followed by Longhetto's extra point. On the final drive of the second period, Plummer once again led the offense on a long drive down to the two-yard line to set up a 20-yard field goal by Nick Lopez.

In the third and final 11-on-11 session, the defense forced the offense into back-to-back three-and-outs on the first two drives. Robby Rowell took over the quarterback reigns on the third and final drive and got the offense down to the seven-yard line before eventually settling for a 53-yard field goal by Longhetto.

Four different Cal quarterbacks – Plummer (8-16-0-66, 1 TD), Millner (5-9-0-52, 1 TD), Rowell (3-6-0-15) and Zach Johnson (1-2-0-6) – combined to complete 17-of-33 passes for 139 yards with two touchdowns and no interceptions. Jeremiah Hunter had a scrimmage-high three catches for 26 yards and was one of 11 different players with at least one reception, while Ott's 34 yards receiving on his touchdown catch were the most in the scrimmage. Brooks led eight different ball carries with 29 yards rushing on four carries and had the lone rushing touchdown of the scrimmage.

Kyle Smith had a scrimmage-high five tackles. Myles Williams had the only solo sack of the scrimmage for an eight-yard loss, while Jaedon Roberts (-6 yards) and Orin Patu (-5 yards) were each credited with a half sack when they got to Millner for an 11-yard loss after a low snap from center. Ryan Puskas (-4 yards), Dejuan Butler (-2 yards) and Tyson McWilliams (-2 yards) each had 1.0 tackle for loss.

"It was kind of the opposite of last week," Cal Travers Family Head Football Coach Justin Wilcox said after the scrimmage. "The defense started faster this week, but then we got into that go zone in the red zone period and the offense made some plays. Ultimately, we want to see good football. We want to see contested plays with no gimme's on either side. I think we saw some more of that today."

The Golden Bears will conclude 15 spring practice sessions with their final four workouts next week. Practices on Monday, Wednesday and Friday begin at 9:45 am, while gates open at Noon for next Saturday's Cal Football Spring Showcase with live television coverage by the Pac-12 Networks starting at 1:30 pm.

All events are admission free and attendees can enter FTX Field at California Memorial Stadium via Gate 2 in the northwest corner.
