Sun Devils Fall Short to Stanford in Pac-12 Championship Final, 4-2

Apr 23, 2022

OJAI, Calif. – An incredible run for the No. 5/20 Sun Devil Women's Tennis team this week in Ojai came to a close on Saturday, as they fell in the final of the Pac-12 Championships, 4-2, to No. 3/18 Stanford.

Wins over No. 4 USC and No. 1 Cal the previous two days propelled the Sun Devils to the championship, becoming the lowest seed in tournament history to reach the final.

For the third consecutive day, the Sun Devils were forced to dig their way out of an early hole after dropping the doubles point. This time, the Comeback Kids were unable to conjure up any Saturday afternoon magic.

The Cardinal started fast, taking both Courts 1 & 2 to spoil the Sun Devils' win on Court 3 by Cali Jankowski and Marianna Argyrokastriti (6-3).

In singles play, the Sun Devils got off to the start they needed, taking four of six first sets via Jankowski, Argyrokastriti, Patricija Spaka and Domenika Turkovic. Down 5-1 on Court 2, Turkovic masterfully rallied to win six of the next seven games to steal the first set over Stanford's Alexandra Yepifanova.

But following the Sun Devils' early success, the Cardinal would prove to be relentless. Stanford pounced as ASU stumbled, and Yepifanova would soon seal the fourth and final point that clinched a Cardinal win.

It snapped a streak of eight consecutive wins for the Sun Devils, who hadn't lost since a 4-3 setback against Oregon on March 20.

COACH'S CORNER
"Always tough to lose but all I can say is how incredibly proud this coaching staff is of our team," head coach Sheila McInerney said. "We battled so hard all year and the Pac-12 tourney was no different. Three great matches against three really good teams. We will rest up, handle final exams and will carry this momentum into the NCAA Championships in two weeks."

Jankowski and Argyrokastriti, who teamed up for a doubles win in the contest's early going, also managed to collect the only individual wins for the Sun Devils. In the tournament finale, the pair once again held down the back half of the starting lineup.

The Sun Devils will turn their attention to the NCAA Tournament, where they'll learn their fate with the selection show on May 2. Singles and doubles brackets will be released on May 3.
