Bears Earn No. 3 Seed At NCAA Championship

Apr 25, 2022

The Cal women's water polo team received an at-large berth to the 2022 NCAA Championship on Monday evening, earning the No. 3 seed and a quarterfinal matchup against host and sixth-seeded Michigan.

The NCAA Championship is scheduled to take place May 6-8 at Michigan's Canham Natatorium.

The Bears will be making their eighth trip to the NCAA Championship. Cal has reached the semifinals in every tournament it has played in, and is 10-8 all time at the championship. The Bears' best finish came in 2011, when they lost in the title match.

Cal's last NCAA Championship appearance came in 2019, when the Bears fell in overtime to USC in the semis.

The Bears went 16-5 this season and was the only team in the country to play a ranked opponent in every game. Cal has wins over No. 2 Stanford and No. 3 UCLA on its resume.

The Bears are led by All-MPSF First Team goalie Isabel Williams, who paces the conference at 10.6 saves per game and ranks second on Cal's all-time single-season saves list with 223. Three-time All-American Kitty Lynn Joustra was also an All-MPSF First Team pick while fellow three-time All-American Emma Wright ranks fourth in the MPSF at 3.7 points per game and leads the Bears with 48 goals and 30 assists.

Cal and Michigan are slated to square off at 3 p.m. PT on Friday, May 6. The Bears and Wolverines met twice during the regular season with Cal winning both games by a combined nine goals.

All quarterfinal and semifinal games will be streamed on while the championship game will air on ESPNU.
