Pac-12 Names Matthew Sox Pitcher of the Week

Apr 25, 2022

SAN FRANCISCO – Utah redshirt senior and right-handed ace Matthew Sox has been named Pac-12 Pitcher of the Week, the conference office announced on Monday afternoon. Sox was outstanding last Friday night, April 22, dealing a complete game in the Utes' series-opening victory at USC.

Just six pitches over a Maddux performance (106), Sox allowed just two earned runs on six hits and a walk, striking out four batters. He went nine up, nine down through three innings and retired the leadoff man seven of nine times. The native of La Cañada, California, was incredibly efficient with his pitch count, sitting at 80 pitches after seven innings and capping the night at 106 with 71 strikes.

Sox's complete game was just the second in the Pac-12 this season and the first such performance by a Utah player since 2017.

Utah (23-15-1, 9-9 Pac-12) went on to take two of three games in the series with the Trojans, securing the team's fourth series victory of the season and first road series triumph over USC since 2012.

The Utes are back home for four games this week, beginning with Tuesday's tilt vs. Dixie State which is slated for a 4 p.m. first pitch at Smith's Ballpark.
