Ducks drop first of five games vs. Beavers

Apr 26, 2022

EUGENE, Ore. — Oregon cut a two-run Oregon State lead to one with a pair of runs in the sixth, but the Beavers added an insurance run in the seventh and then held on for a 4-2 nonconference win at PK Park on Tuesday night.

The game marked the first of five in a 13-day span between No. 25 Oregon and No. 2 Oregon State. The two teams will meet again at PK Park next Tuesday (May 3) before playing a three-game Pac-12 Conference series in Corvallis (May 6-8).

How It Happened: Oregon State jumped on top early scoring an unearned run off Oregon starter Christian Ciuffetelli, who was making his second career start. Wade Meckler reached on a leadoff single, moved to second on a passed ball and then to third on a Travis Bazzana bunt single.

Ciuffetelli got Jacob Melton to ground into a 3-6 double play, but Meckler scored to give the Beavers (32-8) a 1-0 lead.

OSU pushed the lead to 3-0 in the fourth with a two-run home run off Oregon reliever Stone Churby.

The Ducks rallied with a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth. Anthony Hall and Colby Shade delivered back-to-back run-scoring singles after Josh Kasevich started the rally with a two-out hit.

OSU scored a run in the seventh to push the lead back to two on a Meckler one-out single on the first pitch Rio Britton threw after coming out of the bullpen.

The Ducks (26-14) brought the tying run to the plate in both the eighth and ninth innings, but couldn't capitalize.
