Sun Devil Women's Golf Earns No. 2 Seed in Stillwater Regional

Apr 27, 2022

TEMPE, Ariz. – The eight-time national champion Sun Devil Women's Golf team will head to Karsten Creek Golf Club in Stillwater, Oklahoma after being selected to the Stillwater NCAA Regional, hosted by Oklahoma State running May 9-11.

GOLF Channel announced the Regionals during their selection show earlier today. Each regional will feature 12 teams and six individuals, with a total of 24 teams advancing to the National Championships to be played May 20-25 at Grayhawk Golf Club in Scottsdale, Arizona. The top two individuals (12 total) from non-qualifying teams from each regional will also advance to the Championship.

This is the 29th consecutive year that Sun Devil Women's Golf has qualified for a regional, doing so every time since the format was instituted. ASU has not missed a NCAA Tournament since 1991.

The program has claimed or shared a total of five Regional team championships, with the last coming during their National Championship run in 2017. A season ago, the Sun Devils had an impressive showing at the Columbus Regional, finishing tied for second on their way to reaching NCAA Match Play.

In the first year of the new regional format, six sites were selected instead of the typical four. This means ASU needs to finish in the Top-4 of the Stillwater Regional (12 teams) in order to clinch a berth in the NCAA Championship and advance to Grahyawk.

Arizona State will be the No. 2 seed in a regional that features host school No. 1 seed Oklahoma State. The regional also includes No. 3 seed Baylor, No. 4 Auburn, No. 5 Michigan State, No. 6 Clemson, No. 7 Campbell (Big South Champion), No. 8 Furman (SoCon Champion, No. 9 NC State, No. 10 California, No. 11 Tulane (AAC Champion), and No. 12 Illinois State (MVC Champion).

"We are excited to have earned the #2 seed at the Oklahoma State regional," Head Coach Missy Farr-Kaye remarked. "Karsten Creek is a great test of golf and I believe this team is ready for the challenge. The best is yet to come for our team!"

The Stillwater Regional features 6 of the Golfstat's Top-35 teams, including No. 6 Oklahoma State, No. 7 Arizona State, No. 17 Baylor and No. 19 Auburn. The regional also has its fair share of individual star power, with nine of the Top-40 individuals in the Golfstat Player Rankings competing in Stillwater. Arizona State's own Alexandra Forsterling is the top-ranked player in the regional, coming in at No. 3.

Karsten Creek Golf Club is home to the Oklahoma State Golf programs. It was designed by Tom Fazio and honored as the Best New Public Course for 1994 by Golf Digest Magazine. The golf course's first college event was the Karsten Creek Collegiate in 1996, only two years after its opening. Karsten Creek then played host to the NCAA Central Regional in May of 2001 before serving as the host of the 2002 Ping/Golfweek Preview. More recently, Karsten Creek once again hosted the NCAA Men's Golf Championships in 2011 and 2018, where thousands of spectators gathered to watch the best collegiate golfers in the country.

The other five regional sites are Albuquerque, New Mexico, Stanford, California, Franklin, Tennessee, Tallahassee, Florida, and Ann Arbor, Michigan. Nine of 11 Pac-12 teams made NCAA Regionals, a testament to the strength of the best conference in women's golf, with four teams receiving Top-6 seeds led by No. 1 seeds Oregon and Stanford.

"The team is going into regionals with a positive and aggressive mindset," sophomore Ashley Menne remarked. "Our goal is to go out there and be the team we have been. We are all playing well right now and truly believe we can win the national championship."

Golf Channel will provide highlights from regional play of both championships leading up to coverage of the 2022 championships to be held at Grayhawk Golf Club in Scottsdale, Ariz., hosted by Arizona State and The Thunderbirds.

The women's championship will be held May 20-25, with GOLF Channel providing live coverage of the final day of individual championship play on May 23 as well as the team match play on May 24-25.  See GOLF Channel full programming schedule.
