Women's Basketball Signs Cia Eklöf from Finland

Apr 27, 2022

PULLMAN, Wash. – Washington State Women's Basketball Head Coach Kamie Ethridge has announced the signing of Cia Eklöf, a 5-10 guard from Helsinki, Finland. Eklöf is the fourth addition to WSU's 2022 signing class.

"Cia Eklöf is the final piece to our 2022-23 roster. Adding another dynamic and versatile combo guard that has the ability to shoot the 3 and attack the rim was a priority for us this spring. We believe Cia's experience playing in the top professional league in Finland has prepared her to step in and play early in her career."

Eklöf was one of the youngest players to play in the Korisliiga, the top women's basketball league in Finland, last season. She appeared in 17 games for Torpan Pojat in a reserve role. She averaged 4.8 points per game in 12.4 minutes of action per game.  The 5-10 guard has also been a member of Finland's U-16 and U-20 National Teams and won the U-16 Finnish Championship.

"Cia has played point guard most of her career and has a great mind for the game. She will bring an exciting brand of basketball to the court and a commitment to excellence off the court.  Her work ethic, leadership skills and ambition to compete at the highest level makes Cia a perfect fit for our Coug team."

The guard from Finland is a Pac-12 women's basketball legacy, as her mother Mia played for California from 1985-1989. Eklöf comes to the Cougars with four years of eligibility. She is Washington State's fourth signee of the 2022 signee class joining Kyra Gardner (5-10 guard; Raymond, Wash.), Lauren Glazier (6-4 forward; North Bend, Wash.), and Astera Tuhina (5-9 guard; Prishtina, Kosovo).

The Washington State women's basketball team is coming off a historic 2021-22 season that saw the Cougars make a return trip to the NCAA Tournament in back-to-back seasons for the first time in program history. WSU won 19 games in 2021-22, which set the program record for most wins in a season in the NCAA era. The Cougars also set the program's benchmark for most Pac-12 Conference wins in a season with 11.
