Up Next For Sun Devil Men's Golf: NCAA Regional Action in Stockton May 16-18

Next up for the Sun Devil men's golf program is to earn a bid to the 2022 NCAA Championships at Grayhawk Golf Club as it travels to NCAA Regional action May 16-18 in Stockton, CA at The Reserve at Spanos Park hosted by Pacific.

ABOUT THE STOCKTON REGIONAL
ASU is the top seed followed by Washington (Pac-12 champion), Stanford, LSU, Oregon, Nevada, Liberty, BYU, UAB, Houston, UC Davis, Denver (Summit League champion), Abilene Christian (WAC) and Weber State (Big Sky). Individuals are Caden Fioroni (UNLV), Jackson Rivera (USC), Tyler Schafer (Long Beach State), Nathan Cogswell (Seattle), and Nate Deziel (North Dakota State).

NCAA REGIONAL SITES
The six regional host sites and hosts for the 2022 championship are Traditions Club in Bryan, Texas (Texas A&M); OSU Golf Club – Scarlet Course in Columbus, Ohio (Ohio State); Yale Golf Course in New Haven, Connecticut (Yale); PGA National Resort – Champions Course in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida (Florida Atlantic); The Reserve at Spanos Park in Stockton, California (Pacific) and the Jimmie Austin Golf Club (Oklahoma), with play taking place May 16-18. The top five teams (30 teams total) and the low individual not on an advancing team (six individuals total) from each regional site will advance to play in the championships at Grayhawk Golf Club in Scottsdale (May 27–June 1).

REGIONAL NOTE
ASU will play in the Pacific Time Zone in a regional for just the fourth time in the past 12 seasons (2010-2022).

 

SUN DEVIL REGIONAL HISTORY
With the team victory and Jon Rahm's title at the 2016 Albuquerque Regional, ASU has won or tied for a NCAA regional title seven times. ASU tied with Arizona in 1991 and tied with New Mexico in 1998. It won the title outright in 1995, 1999, 2001 2009 and 2016. In addition to Rahm's two titles (2015 as well), Sun Devil Paul Casey won a 1998 individual regional title outright followed by Jeff Quinney (1999), Benjamin Alvarado Holley (2007) and then Jesper Kennegard in 2009. Matt Jones shared medalist honors in 2001.

ASU is ranked fifth in the May 1 Golfweek computer rankings. Individually Josel Ballester is ranked 18th, followed by Mason Andersen (41), Cameron Sisk (44), Perston Summerhays (46), James Leow (57), David Pugi (140) and Ryggs Johnsont (194).

Senior and local product has played in 54 tournaments (166 rounds, which is third-most in Sun Devil history in the Golfstat era) and has posted a 71.39 scoring average...low round was a 65 and has 47 rounds in the 60s.

Eight top-30 Golfweek teams did not make the cut in 2022: Texas A&M (14), Arizona (16), Auburn (17), North Florida (23), LSU (27), Alabama (28), New Mexico (29) and Baylor (30).


COACH THURMOND REGIONAL NOTE: Coach Thurmond has reached the NCAA Championship in all four chances at ASU. Since becoming a head coach in 2002, his squads made the NCAA Championship in 16 of his 19 seasons, missing only in 2016, 2011 and 2007.
