Hall’s big night gives Ducks win

Apr 29, 2022

EUGENE, Ore. — Anthony Hall drove in a season-high five runs and five Oregon pitchers combined to allow just four hits in a 7-2 Pac-12 Conference win over California at PK Park on Friday night.

The Ducks rallied from a 2-0 deficit, scoring seven unanswered runs after the fifth inning.

How It Happened: Cal (20-21, 10-12 Pac-12) scored a pair of runs (one earned) in the top of the fourth inning off Oregon starter RJ Gordon, but Oregon rallied to take the lead in the bottom of the thanks to three doubles.

Drew Cowley started the rally with a one-out double into the left-field corner. After a walk and a strikeout, Josh Kasevich doubled to left center scoring Cowley to cut the lead in half. Hall made it back-to-back two-baggers when he lined a two-run shot off the left-field wall to give Oregon a one-run lead.

The Ducks (27-14, 12-7 Pac-12) broke the game open with a five run eighth inning. After Josh White walked the bases loaded, Hall delivered a three-run triple off the center-field wall scoring Brennan Milone, Jacob Walsh and Kasevich. Hall made it 7-2 when he scored on a Colby Shade ground out.

Gordon kept the Ducks in the game early retiring the first nine batters he faced. After Cal scored its two runs in the fourth, Gordon retired the Golden Bears in order in the fifth before leaving the game in the top of the sixth with a runner on third and two outs.

Rio Britton relieved Gordon and got an inning-ending ground out to keep the Bears off the board. Britton got the first out of the seventh before walking a batter. The Ducks turned to Christian Ciuffetelli who got the next two hitters to fly out to end the inning.

Ciuffetelli struck out All-American Dylan Beavers, the Pac-12 home run leader, to open the eighth inning. Oregon went to the pen after the strikeout, getting an out from Matt Dallas before he surrendered a pair of two-out singles.

Oregon closer Kolby Somers got out of the jam striking out the final batter of the inning, before getting the final three outs in the ninth to record his eighth save.

Box Score Notes: Hall's five RBI were the most by a Duck since Josiah Cromwick had five against San Diego on Feb. 21 … Hall's career-high six RBI came vs. Central Connecticut State in the NCAA Eugene Regional on June 4, 2021 … The triple was his fifth of the season, tying him with four other Ducks for the fifth most in a single season at Oregon … He needs to more to tie for the all-time lead … His eight career triples are tied for the eighth most in school history … Somers moved into a tie for career saves at Oregon with 20, matching Kenyon Yovan (2017-21) … He also moved into a tie with Kellen Moen (2011) for eighth in single-season saves with eight.
