Baseball Drops Saturday Matinee to No. 2 Beavers

Apr 30, 2022

SALT LAKE CITY – The Utah baseball team dropped its Saturday matinee match-up against No. 2 Oregon State 9-1 inside Smith's Ballpark.
The Utes (25-16, 10-10 Pac-12) struck first against the Beavers after Landon Frei scored all the way from first on a triple from Chase Anderson that was laced into the gap in left center. OSU's Jacob Kmatz settled in after that however, striking out the next two batters to end the inning.

Oregon State (33-9, 14-6 Pac-12) answered in the top of the third, putting up a two spot after starting the frame with a hit by pitch and walk. With runners on first and second and one out, Jacob Melton plated the tying run with an infield single after a wild pitch put runners on the corners. The Beavers then got the go-ahead run in the very next at-bat after Garret Forrester scored Wade Meckler with a sac-fly to right.
Utah's stater, Jaden Harris, bounced back after giving up the lead and held the Beavers scoreless the next two frames before being relieved by Bryson Van Sickle in the sixth. Like Harris, Kmatz settled in after allowing the first run of the game and tossed four scoreless innings before exiting the game with one out in the sixth.
After a scoreless frame in the sixth by both teams, Oregon State sandwiched a pair of three-run innings in the seventh and ninth with a straight number in the eighth frame to secure the 9-1 victory.
Harris wrapped up the afternoon pitching five complete innings giving up an earned run walked four while fanning a handful of Beavers. Anderson was the only Ute with multiple hits going 2-for-4 with an RBI triple.
Sunday's rubber match between the Utes and Beavers is slated for 7 p.m. (MT) on Pac-12 Networks. Cam Day is slated to take the hill for Utah while Jake Pfenning is the projected starter for OSU.
