Rowing Captures Fawley Cup for the 27th Time
COLTON, Wash. – The No. 20 Washington State rowing team won five of its six races against Gonzaga and captured the Fawley Cup to cap off WSU's lone home regatta of the season Saturday, April 30.
The First Varsity Eight won the Fawley Cup, a trophy given to the winner of the 1V8+ race between WSU and GU, race by 6.1 seconds. The Cougars clocked in at 7:11.30 to claim the Fawley Cup for the 27th time in the 30-year history of the race.
In its first regatta at Wawawai Landing since May 1, 2021, the WSU rowing team won five of the six races against GU.
"It was fantastic to be home and get out of our own beds this morning and race," said WSU Rowing Head Coach Jane LaRiviere. "It was awesome to see the support from the fans. Gonzaga, as usual, was a worthy opponent. There were some dicey conditions in the first few races, but it settled down and we ended up having some good competitive races."
The Cougars swept both Varsity Four races against the Bulldogs. Washington State's 1V4+ boat posted a time of 8:10.34 to finish 13.47 seconds ahead of Gonzaga, while the 2V4+ got the regatta started with a win over GU, clocking in at 8:42.98.
The Cougs' Second Varsity Eight finished 14.73 seconds ahead of Gonzaga, as they won the 2V8+ race with a time of 7:30.30. WSU's Third Varsity Eight also picked up a win over GU, as the Cougars clocked in at 7:45.28 to win its race by 9.98 seconds. The Novice Eight also took to the Snake River on Saturday and posted a time of 9:01.87 to finished second to Gonzaga's Fourth Varsity Eight.
