Series Even After Huskies Fall To Stanford 6-2

Apr 30, 2022

SEATTLE - The Washington Husky baseball team took the field aiming for the series win today after edging the sixth-ranked Stanford Cardinal last night 4-3. A run here and a run there for Stanford proved too much for the Dawgs in game two however, as the Cardinal took the win 6-2.

RHP Calvin Kirchoff took the mound for his tenth Husky start of the season, but found himself in trouble early giving up a leadoff triple to right center. Third baseman Michael Snyder had trouble gloving the ball from the next batter resulting in Stanford's first run and leaving a runner on first. Snyder quickly made up for it gloving the next hit and firing it over to Josh Urps at second and on to Will Simpson at first for the double play. The next batter grounded out to Snyder as well.

A single to right field got the inning started for Stanford. Following a fly out to right field, another single, this time through the left side, put runners on first and second. A pop up brought out number two. The fifth batter of the inning singled through the right side scoring the runner on second. A fly out to AJ Guerrero in left ended the top half of the inning.

Stanford began with a runner on first following a single through the left side. A pair of fly outs to McKay Barney in center field followed. Kirchoff was unable to escape the inning however, as a double down the left field line put runners on the corners and triggered a call to the bullpen. RHP Case Matter entered and loaded the bases with a walk. Another walk gave Stanford a 2-0 lead before a weak fly out to Simpson brought out number three.

Matter skated through the fifth delivering a fly out and a pair of strikeouts, but a leadoff walk in the sixth set the stage for a different story. A double to the next batter put two runners in scoring position. The next batter singled to Urps at second scoring a run and putting runners on the corners.  With the score now 4-0 Matter delivered a strikeout for out number one. A sacrifice fly to right field made it a 5-0 ballgame before Matter sat the next batter down swinging at strike three.

Cam Clayton led off the bottom of the sixth watching ball one. With his timing now dialed in he welcomed the second pitch and crushed a frozen rope into the left field bullpen. Johnny Tincher stepped in next and drew a walk. Will Simpson grounded out to third, but advanced Tincher to second on the play. Coby Morales then sent a shot to center for a base hit putting runners on the corners.  Next up, AJ Guerrero contributed with a sacrifice fly to left field that plated Tincher to make it a 5-2 ballgame. That would be it for the Dawgs in the sixth however, as Snyder grounded into a 5-4 fielder's choice.

Matter sat the Cardinal down 1-2-3 in the seventh and started the eighth off with a strikeout before being replaced by Stu Flesland III. Flesland delivered a pair of strikeouts of his own before taking the mound in the ninth. Things started smoothly with a ground out to Clayton at short, but a pair of singles put runners on the corners with just one out. The next batter placed a sacrifice bunt down the first base line. Simpson fielded it and threw to Urps at first for the out, but the damage had been done as Stanford now had a 6-2 lead. A final ground out sent things to the bottom of the ninth where a single to right by Snyder was all the Huskies could muster.

Calvin Kirchoff took the loss moving to 2-3 on the season. He went 3.2 innings giving up 3 runs on 6 hits with no walks or strikeouts. Case Matter also went 3.2 innings giving up 2 runs on 2 hits with 3 walks and 5 strikeouts. Stu Flesland III went 1.2 innings giving up 1 run on 3 hits with a walk and two strikeouts.
The Huskies get another chance at the series win tomorrow in game three at 1:05 PM.
