Seven Wins, 12 Season Bests in April Finale

Apr 30, 2022

EUGENE, Ore. – Kemba Nelson and Micah Williams each collected three wins Saturday evening at the Desert Heat Classic in Tucson, Ariz. Coupled with a first-place showing by Mia Moerck at the OSU High Performance in Corvallis, the Oregon track and field team closed out the month with seven wins on the day.

In mirror images of one another, Nelson and Williams each ran a leg of victorious 4x100-meter relays before closing out the night in the desert with wins in the 100 and 200 meters.

Led by Moerck, the UO women swept the top three spots and placed four inside the top five in the 800 meters. Moerck finished with a new outdoor PR, stopping the clock in 2:06.24 to erase a previous best of 2:06.47 from last year's NCAA West Preliminary. She was joined in the top five by teammates Carly Kleefeld (2:07.10), McKenna Ramsay (2:08.20—just off her PR) and Nicole Louw (2:11.51).

The Ducks swept the 4x100-meter relays with the UO women putting together a season-best time of 42.93 to finish well clear of runner-up San Diego State (44.32). Based on times entering the night, the team of Nelson, Jadyn Mays, Jasmin Reed and Jasmine Montgomery posted a top-10 time in the NCAA this season and moved into a tie for No. 7 on the program's all-time list.

On the men's side, Williams teamed with Rieker Daniel, Will Mundy and Xavier Nairne to get the baton around the track in 39.12 for the victory. That time also makes them the No. 7 quartet in UO history.

Nelson (11.10) and Williams (10.02) secured the top spots in the 100 meters. Nelson led a 1-2-3 finish for the Women of Oregon followed by teammates Jadyn Mays with a personal-best 11.16 and Jasmine Montgomery crossing in 11.35, a season best for the freshman. Mays' time gets her up a spot to No. 8 on the UO top-10 list. Williams and Nairne (10.30) went 1-2 in the men's race.

In the 200 meters, Williams lowered his PR to 20.35 to take over the top spot in the Pac-12 from Udodi Onwuzurike (20.38) of Stanford. That mark also moves Williams from No. 6 to No. 3 on the UO all-time chart. For Nelson, she stopped the clock in 22.80 for a personal best of her own. She and Mays are now tied for the fastest time in the Pac-12 and at the No. 10 spot in program history.

In her second race of the evening, Shana Grebo turned in a runner-up showing in the 400-meter hurdles at the Desert Heat Classic. She crossed the finish line in 57.20, just .05 behind Shannon Meisberger from Arizona. The two entered the day with the top-two times in the Pac-12 in the event. Earlier, Grebo ran a personal best of 13.56 in the 100-meter hurdles, strengthening her hold on the No. 8 spot in UO history.

Mundy, off a win with the 4x100-meter relay, registered a lifetime best of his own in a third-place finish in the 400-meter hurdles. The Portland native posted a time of 50.71 to eclipse his previous PR of 51.36 from last year's NCAA West Preliminary. Mundy began his day with a fifth-place turn (14.41) in the 110-meter hurdles.

At the OSU High Performance meet, Eric Lyon (65.55m/215-0) finished runner-up in the javelin as the Ducks' top performer with Asher Krauel and Jett Kinder in third and fifth, respectively. In round three, Krauel got the javelin out to 64.72m/212-4 to establish a new lifetime best.

The Ducks are back home May 6 for the Oregon Twilight. Single-meet and season tickets for the home schedule, plus all-session and single-day tickets for the Pac-12 and NCAA Championships, are currently on sale. Click HERE or call 800-WEBFOOT (932-3668) to purchase.
