California's Zaccaro named Pac-12 Lacrosse Scholar-Athlete of the Year

TEMPE, Ariz. - California’s Nikki Zaccaro has been named the Pac-12 Lacrosse Scholar-Athlete of the Year for the 2022 season, the conference office announced Wednesday prior to the Bears’ first game at the Pac-12 Tournament. The award, which is presented in each of the 24 sports the Pac-12 sponsors, was established to honor collegiate student-athletes who are standouts both academically and in their sports discipline.

Zaccaro, a fifth-year attacker from Newtown, Connecticut, double majored in film & media and political science and wrapped up her undergraduate studies with a 3.86 grade-point average. Upon graduation in May 2021, she earned Distinction in General Scholarship, Cal's equivalent to cum laude. Zaccaro is currently pursuing a graduate degree in the Berkeley Haas Global Access Program and has maintained a 3.58 grade-point average in her advanced coursework.

Cal's all-time leader in games played (78) and assists (91), Zaccaro has made 67 career starts over the past four-plus seasons. Her 1.16 assists per game average is second in program history and she is also Cal’s active career leader in starts (67), goals (70), points (161), shots (208) and shots on goal (136). Zaccaro has compiled a .337 shot percentage in her career, a .654 shots on goal percentage, one game-winning goal, 84 ground balls, 14 caused turnovers, 44 draw controls, and is 12-of-45 (.267) on free position shots. 

Off the field, Zaccaro is a two-time member of the Pac-12's Spring Academic Honor Roll (2020, 2021) and was a first-team Pac-12 All-Academic selection in 2019. She made Cal's Dean's List in the spring of 2019 and picked up CoSIDA Academic All-District-8 Women's At-Large honors as a junior in 2020.

Zacarro is also a co-founder of the Go Bears Go Vote initiative, which was founded to encourage voter registration and educate people about voting, with the majority of her work being done during the 2020 fall semester.

In order to be eligible for the Pac-12 Scholar-Athlete of the Year award, student-athletes must be a senior (in athletics eligibility) on track to receive a degree, have a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or higher, participate in at least 50 percent of the scheduled contests in the sport and have a minimum one year in residence at the institution. Each Pac-12 institution may nominate one individual per sport, and the winners are selected by a committee of Pac-12 staff members at the conclusion of each sport’s regular season. The athletics accomplishments of the nominees are a consideration in voting for the award. 

A Scholar-Athlete of the Year is named in each of the Pac-12’s 24 sponsored sports: baseball, men’s basketball, women’s basketball, beach volleyball, men’s cross country, women’s cross country, football, men’s golf, women’s golf, women’s gymnastics, women’s lacrosse, men’s rowing, women’s rowing, men’s soccer, women’s soccer, softball, men’s swimming & diving, women’s swimming & diving, men’s tennis, women’s tennis, men’s track & field, women’s track & field, women’s volleyball, and wrestling. The award was first established during the 2007-08 academic year.
