BERKELEY – Wednesday has been a banner day for Haley Giavara, as the Cal women's tennis junior was named to the NCAA Singles Championship field and was one of six Golden Bears named to the All-Pac-12 teams on Wednesday. Giavara and Jessica Alsola claimed spots on the All-Pac-12 second team, while Erin Richardson, Julia Rosenqvist, Hannah Viller Moeller and Katja Wiersholm earned conference honorable mention.
Giavara, a junior from San Diego, was added to the 64-player postseason singles tournament as the first alternate. Alsola, a freshman from Fresno, is the fifth alternate in NCAA singles. Additionally, the 38th-ranked pair of Giavara and Valentina Ivanov is the fifth alternate for the NCAA Doubles Championship.
A singles All-American in her freshman season, Giavara earns All-Pac-12 honors for the second time in her career, including a first-team nod in 2021. She is ranked 63rd in the ITA singles poll and has records of 14-14 in singles and 19-8 in doubles. Giavara is one of three Bears – including Alsola and Wiersholm – who claimed Pac-12 Player of the Week honors this season. Giavara earned her conference award with big victories in Cal's 5-2 win over No. 17 Stanford. She defeated the Cardinal's 19th-ranked Connie Ma, 6-1, 6-0, and partnered with Hannah Viller Moeller to beat Sara Choy and Alexandra Yepifanova, 6-3, to clinch the doubles point.
Alsola, ranked 71st, has a 31-9 singles record – including a 10-5 mark on court two – and leads the Golden Bears in singles wins. She's also 21-9 in doubles. Alsola earned her Pac-12 Player of the Week award after winning twice in singles – including a 6-3, 7-6(5) result over Pepperdine's 30th-ranked Victoria Flores – in Cal wins over the second-ranked Waves and UC Santa Barbara. The freshman duo of Alsola and Wiersholm is ranked 90th in doubles and has a 9-3 record.
A Kirkland, Washington, native, Wiersholm has a 21-3 singles record after opening the season at 17-0 and is 15-5 in doubles. She's gone 6-0 at court-five singles and 8-2 on court three. Wiersholm collected her Pac-12 Player of the Week honor on March 29, after helping lead the Bears to a 4-3 victory over 17th-ranked USC. Wiersholm and Alsola defeated USC's 64th-ranked Eryn Cayetano and Grace Piper, 6-3, on court one to clinch the doubles point for the Bears. In singles, the then-122nd-ranked Wiersholm defeated the Trojans' 77th-ranked Snow Han, 6-4, 6-3.
Rosenqvist, a senior, claims All-Pac-12 honors for the fourth time in her career, including a first-team selection in 2018 and second-team accolades in 2019 and 2021. She is 24-8 in singles and 22-7 in doubles in her final season. The Onsala, Sweden, native clinched the win over Stanford on April 16 – beating India Houghton, 7-6(8), 6-3 – to secure the Pac-12 regular-season title and the top seed in the Pac-12 Championship for the Bears. She has clinched three Cal wins so far this season, including a 4-0 triumph over Vanderbilt in the Jan. 29 ITA Kickoff Weekend final, in which she defeated 119th-ranked Holly Staff, 7-6(3), 6-2, and a 4-3, March 29 result over No. 5 Pepperdine, against which she bested the 82nd-ranked Savannah Broadus, 6-2, 6-7(5), 6-4. A sophomore from Copenhagen, Denmark, Viller Moeller has compiled a 26-12 singles record and is 11-7 in doubles in 2021-22. She had a big win in the Bears' ITA National Team Indoor Championship opener, beating Jeanette Mireles, 4-6, 6-3, 7-6(5), to clinch the win over No. 8 Texas A&M. Cal is still the only team to have beaten the Aggies this season. Viller Moeller also clinched Cal's March 26 win over No. 17 USC, defeating Grace Piper, 6-4, 6-4, as the Bears bested the Trojans, 4-3.
Richardson, a junior, has records of 16-3 in singles and 31-11 in doubles, with the Bournemouth, England, product pacing the Bears in doubles wins. Richardson has lost only once in singles in 2022. She won her first singles match in a dual match this season in Cal's 7-0 rout of Utah on March 18, with Richardson beating Anya Lamoreaux, 6-1, 6-4.
The Bears open the NCAA Championship on Friday at 1 p.m., when they host Northern Arizona at the Hellman Tennis Complex.
