Hoogmartens, Zahraj Earn All-Conference Honors

May 4, 2022

SAN FRANCISCO – Alexander Hoogmartens was voted to the All-Conference First Team and Patrick Zahraj earned a spot on the Honorable Mention list, the Pac-12 announced Wednesday.

The honors marked firsts for both student-athletes. Hoogmartens became UCLA's first freshman to make the First Team since Daniel Kosakowski in 2011.

Hoogmartens, who was named to the NCAA singles tournament field Tuesday, is ranked No. 35 among singles players by the ITA. From Feb. 13-March 29, he collected seven singles wins without a loss. Consecutively, Hoogmartens defeated No. 14 Luc Fomba of TCU, 6-2, 6-2, (March 10), No. 102 Yuta Kikuchi of California, 2-6, 6-2, 6-2, (March 25) and No. 2 Arthur Fery of Stanford, 6-3, 6-1, (March 26). He garnered a national player-of-the-week award from the ITA, as well as the Pac-12's weekly accolade, following those efforts. Hoogmartens has also had doubles success and possesses rankings with Bryce Pereira (No. 58) and Drew Baird (No. 79). Hoogmartens and Pereira outlasted No. 6 Stefan Dostanic and Bradley Frye of USC for a doubles-point-clinching 7-6(4) victory April 9. Hoogmartens has a 14-6 singles record, including a 9-4 mark in dual matches. He is a combined 14-7 in doubles play, with a 9-5 dual-match showing.

Zahraj has also had success in both singles and doubles contests. His 13-7 singles record (8-5 in dual matches) includes top-50 wins against non-conference foes No. 49 Pietro Fellin of Pepperdine, 7-6(6), 6-2 (Feb. 25) and No. 27 Andre Ilagan of Hawai'i, 6-4, 6-3 (April 12). Zahraj's singles ranking reached a career-best No. 75 as a result, and now sits at No. 76. On the doubles courts, he has shared most of his time between Bryce Pereira and Giacomo Revelli. Zahraj and Pereira are ranked No. 75 and most notably knocked off No. 10 Dostanic and Frye by a 6-1 score (March 1). Zahraj has a 13-11 doubles record, 9-7 in dual matches.
