No. 11 Cal Blanks NAU In NCAA Opener

May 6, 2022
Cal senior Julia Rosenqvist won in straight sets to seal Cal's victory over Northern Arizona.

BERKELEY – Eleventh-seeded/ranked California women's tennis opened the NCAA Championship with a 4-0 blanking of Northern Arizona on Friday afternoon at the Hellman Tennis Complex. The Golden Bears advance to Saturday's second round/round of 32 to play 34th-ranked Texas Tech, which defeated No. 25 Loyola Marymount, 4-1, earlier in the day at Hellman.

Cal improved to 17-7 with Friday's win, while NAU ended its run in the NCAA team tournament at 12-8.

The Bears started off strong in doubles. The court-one duo of Haley Giavara and Valentina Ivanov, ranked 38th, earned the first win of the day, beating Annabel Davis and Eleanor Millard, 6-1. In a Cal race to clinch the doubles point, the Bears on court two finished first, with the 90th-ranked Jessica Alsola and Katja Wiersholm defeating Gina Dittmann and Ava Neyestani, 6-1.

"We did a good job of taking care of our service games, and we were talking about that a bit this week – making sure we were setting up the plays in doubles," Cal head coach Amanda Augustus said. "We were aggressive enough, and I hope we continue that tomorrow. The team we play will be different tomorrow, so hopefully we'll be ready for that. I wanted to see us play more aggressively than the other team today, and we did a good job of that."

In singles, Cal sophomore Hannah Viller Moeller quickly doubled Cal's lead to 2-0 over the Lumberjacks when she ousted Laura Duhl, 6-1, 6-0, on court five. Erin Richardson followed with a 6-2, 6-1 triumph over Davis on court six. Cal senior Julia Rosenqvist – playing in one of the last home matches of her career – then sealed the victory on court three, beating Elinor Beazley, 6-1, 6-2.

"Hannah did a really good job," Augustus said. "I don't remember when she's been the first to finish. She did a really great job. Her dad and one of her sisters are visiting here today. That was fun. Everyone did a great job. Haley was off to a slow start, but she was working it out and would've been fine. It was good to see Jules clinch another match for us. We're looking forward to another match at Hellman tomorrow."

Cal plays Texas Tech at 12 p.m. on Saturday for the right to advance to the NCAA round of 16.
