Transfer Devin Askew Joins Golden Bears

May 9, 2022
Cal has signed transfer guard Devin Askew, who played the previous two seasons at Texas and Kentucky.

BERKELEY – California men's basketball head coach Mark Fox announced Monday that the Golden Bears have signed transfer Devin Askew to the program's roster.

A 6-3, 195-pound guard from Sacramento, California, Askew arrives in Bear Territory with three seasons of eligibility remaining after previous stops at Texas (2021-22) and Kentucky (2020-21). Having already used his one-time transfer to become immediately eligible at Texas last season, Askew will require an NCAA waiver to play right away at Cal in 2022-23.

"I'm excited for Devin to be coming back close to home and we can't wait to get him on campus this summer," Fox said. "He will bring a work ethic that fits seamlessly with what our program does on a daily basis and we will welcome his talent and versatility in the backcourt."

The consensus No. 1 point guard in the class of 2021 prior to reclassifying to be a part of the class of 2020, Askew totaled 118 assists and a 1.55 assist-to-turnover ratio across his first two collegiate seasons. As a freshman at Kentucky, Askew started 20 of 25 games played and ranked second on the team in assists (73, 2.9 APG) while averaging 6.5 points and 2.6 rebounds in 28.9 minutes per game. He led the Wildcats in assists in 16 games and had a team-high 16 games with three or more assists.

In his lone season at Texas, Askew averaged 2.1 points and 1.3 assists in 14.9 minutes over 34 games played (three starts).

Askew joins an incoming Cal class that includes standout prep forwards ND Okafor (Dundalk, Ireland) and Grant Newell (Chicago, Ill.).

Out of Mater Dei High School in Santa Ana, Calif., Askew was ranked nationally as the class of 2020's No. 26 overall prospect and rated as a five-star prospect by ESPN after reclassifying from the class of 2021. He averaged 16.7 points, 6.3 assists and 4.9 rebounds per game while claiming first-team California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) and Trinity League Player of the Year honors in his final season at Mater Dei. As a sophomore at Mater Dei, Askew led his team to the 2018-19 CIF Open Division Southern California regional title and earned MaxPreps Boys Basketball third-team Sophomore All-America accolades. He additionally earned a spot in the prestigious Jordan Brand Classic.

Askew was born in Los Angeles, Calif., and is the son of Brian and Katie Askew.
