Standout Trio Garners Pac-12 Accolades

May 10, 2022

EUGENE, Ore. – Powered by their individual performances at the Oregon Twilight, Luis Peralta (men's track), Jaida Ross (women's field) and Mason Strunk (men's field) have been selected as Pac-12 Athletes of the Week. This marks the second time in the past three weeks that three Ducks have been recognized in the same week.
Overall, Oregon has earned seven Pac-12 Athlete of the Week honors during the season, matching the total from last year.
The postseason begins Friday afternoon with the 2022 Pac-12 Championships (May 13-15) in Eugene at Hayward Field. All-session and single-day tickets for the Pac-12 and NCAA Championships are currently on sale. Click HERE or call 800-WEBFOOT (932-3668) to purchase. Oregon students can claim their free ticket through the GoDucks Gameday app.
Peralta recorded a season-best time of 1:49.12 to win the 800 meters at the Oregon Twilight, knocking more than a second off his previous best (1:50.39) from the 2022 outdoor season. With that result, he moved to seventh in the Pac-12 and ran a top-35 regional time that puts him in position to qualify for the NCAA West Preliminary.
The Passaic, N.J., native is now one of three UO men under 1:50 in the 800 meters this season, joining Matthew Erickson (1:48.68) and Elliott Cook (1:48.92). Less than one second separates the top seven in the Pac-12 entering this weekend's conference meet.
Ross was a two-time winner at the Oregon Twilight, finishing first in the shot put and discus. She began the day with a lifetime best of 55.51m/182-1 in the discus, out-distancing her old PR by just under eight feet. Ross now sits at No. 3 on the UO all-time list and currently ranks sixth in the Pac-12 in the event.
The Medford, Ore., native completed the double with a winning toss of 16.77m/55-0.25 in the shot put. Ross will enter the Pac-12 Championships with a best of season- and lifetime-best of 17.13m/56-2.5, just behind teammate Mine De Klerk (17.19m/56-4.75).
In the men's hammer, Strunk unleashed a lifetime best of his own with a measure of 65.43m/214-8 on his final attempt of the competition. The mark is three feet beyond his previous best of 64.44m/211-5 from the Hayward Premiere (April 1). Strunk moves to within 14 inches of the program's top 10, a list that has gone unchanged since the 2016 season. The Salem, Ore., native now ranks seventh in the Pac-12 and 18th in the NCAA West standings.
