Four Bears Earn All-Conference Honors
SAN FRANCISCO – California collected four 2022 All-Pac-12 softball honors on Wednesday, the most for the program since the 2016 season.
Catcher Makena Smith and shortstop Tatum Anzaldo were both selected to the All-Pac-12 First Team, while pitcher/utility player Sona Halajian earned All-Conference Second Team honors. In addition, Infielder Acacia Anders was named to the Pac-12 All-Freshman Team.
Smith, a team leader and captain, sits third in the Pac-12 with a .421 batting average heading into the final week of the regular season. The Murrieta, Calif., native earned Third Team All-Conference honors during the 2021 season. Smith is second on the team in both home runs (12) and RBI (36) even while missing 13 games due to injury.
Hailing from Whittier, Calif., Anzaldo has been at the top of the conference in hits all season long. She has collected 72 hits in 53 games, while sitting in the top 10 of the conference in batting average throughout the year. Anzaldo has had a big part of leading the Bears' defense, starting every game at shortstop for the team with the most double plays (20) in the conference.
Halajian has been a two-way star for the Bears all season as a pitcher and with the bat. She is tied for second in the conference in wins in the circle (18), while being tied for sixth in home runs (13). A native of San Anselmo, Calif., Halajian is hitting .362 on the year in the cleanup spot, the third-best average on the team.
Playing a strong third base all season, Anders has made her presence known in the lineup during her first year of college softball. Anders is fourth on the team in average (.327) while being second among freshmen in the conference with 55 hits. The Vacaville, Calif., native hit a walk-off home run on March 19 to secure Cal's first win over Washington since the 2016 season.
