Smith Named To Academic All-District Team

May 12, 2022

BERKELEY – California catcher Makena Smith was named to the CoSIDA Academic All-District 8 Softball First Team on Thursday. The Murrieta, Calif., native earned the honor recognizing top student-athletes for their performances on the field and in the classroom.

It's the first CoSIDA Academic All-District selection for Smith, a team leader and captain, who sits third in the Pac-12 with a .421 batting average heading into the final week of the regular season. Smith is second on the team in both home runs (12) and RBI (36) even while missing 13 games due to injury.

Smith earned First Team All-Conference honors on Wednesday after receiving a third team nod after the 2021 season. The junior carries a 3.55 GPA in public health and was the only catcher to make the team.

11 student-athletes were selected to the All-District 8 Team, covering Alaska, Arizona, California, Hawai'i, Oregon, Utah, Washington and Canada.

Smith is the 11th Golden Bear to earn Academic All-District Honors and the first since Lindsey Ziegenhirt in 2011.

Smith and her fellow Academic All-District first team honorees advance to the CoSIDA Academic All-America ballot. First-, second- and third-team Academic All-America honorees will be announced in June.
