May 13, 2022

CORVALLIS, Ore. – Senior Mariah Mazon threw all but one out, struck out six and homered for the third time in game-two of the Utah series on Friday morning as Oregon State softball defeated the Utes, 3-1, to clinch the Pac-12 series at Kelly Field.

The Beavers (33-18, 9-14 Pac-12) defeated the Utah Utes (26-27, 8-15 Pac-12) and clinched the final regular season series and their fourth of the season. Oregon State will go for the sweep tomorrow at 12 p.m. PT at Kelly Field but not before honoring Mazon prior to first pitch on Senior Day.

Freshmen Kiki Escobar and Kaylah Nelsen led the offense with two hits apiece while Escobar added a run scored. Freshman teammate Eliana Gottlieb collected a double for Oregon State in the second inning.

Mazon and the Beaver offense picked up where they left off in game-one, tacking on three runs in the first frame. Mazon cracked her third bomb of the series with a two-run shot over the left field wall, driving home Escobar after she led off the inning with a left field single. Grace Messmer added the insurance run with a sacrifice fly.

After Des Rivera roped a single to right field in the second, Gottlieb delivered a two-out double. Mazon loaded the bases after drawing a walk but the Beavers stranded the bases loaded.

Oregon State's defense did its job in the fourth, forcing Utah to strand the bases loaded. The Utes reached on a hit to go along with a walk and a fielder's choice but Mazon ended the threat with a pop fly to Savanah Whatley at shortstop.

Utah got a run back in the sixth, getting on the board with a leadoff home run but a web gem double play from Escobar ended the inning.

With two outs and the bases loaded, freshman Sarah Haendiges relieved Mazon in the seventh. The Pac-12 second team honoree ended the inning and sealed the victory for OSU with a line out to right field. The save was her second of the 2022 campaign.

Oregon State and Utah are back in action tomorrow for game-three, beginning at 12 p.m. The game will be available on Oregon State's live stream.
