No. 11 Cal Ends NCAA Run In Raleigh

RALEIGH, N.C. – The California women's tennis team saw its postseason run come to an end when the 11th-seeded/11th-ranked Golden Bears lost to sixth-seeded/sixth-ranked N.C. State, 4-0, on Saturday in the NCAA Super Regional at the J.W. Isenhour Tennis Center.
 
The Bears concluded the team portion of the season with an 18-8 record. N.C. State improved to 26-5 as the Wolfpack qualified for the NCAA quarterfinals next week in Urbana, Illinois.
 
Cal fell behind 1-0 after doubles. The Bears' 38th-ranked Haley Giavara and Valentina Ivanov lost to the top-ranked Jaeda Daniel and Nell Miller, 6-3, on court one, and then N.C. State clinched when Cal's Erin Richardson and Julia Rosenqvist dropped a 6-3 result to Sophie Abrams and Priska Nugroho on court three.
 
In singles, the Wolfpack took a 2-0 lead when Cal's Erin Richardson lost to Abrams, 6-2, 6-1, on court six. Cal trailed 3-0 when Hannah Viller Moeller lost to Amelia Rajecki, 6-0, 6-1, on court five, and then N.C. State closed the match when the 83rd-ranked Nugroho beat Cal senior Julia Rosenqvist, 7-6(2), 6-1, on court three.
 
"It was a very close match today, despite what the score looks like," Cal head coach Amanda Augustus said. "Doubles was very, very close on all three courts. Same with singles, on courts one through four. This was a team we hadn't seen before, and we competed very hard but just came up short.
 
"This round of 16 team improved a ton from our round of 16 team a year ago. I'm pretty sure we'll finish in the top 10 in the country. To have several top-10 wins, a Pac-12 regular-season championship and reaching the quarterfinals of ITA National Team indoors, this team accomplished a lot. It was a really fun team to coach. As we send off Julia to graduation and her future endeavors, the younger Bears will carry the torch forward."
 
Cal star Haley Giavara continues individual postseason play when she competes in the NCAA Singles Championship from May 23-28 in Urbana. Cal freshman Jessica Alsola is an alternate for NCAA singles, and the duo of Giavara and Ivanov is an alternate for the NCAA Doubles Championship.
