Men’s Golf In Fifth After Day One In Texas

May 16, 2022

BRYAN, Texas – Mateo Fuenmayor is tied for third and Carson Barry tied for 11th after the first day of action at the NCAA Bryan Regional, pacing the Beavers to a fifth-place mark after 18 holes on Monday.

"The difference today for our guys showed in their body language," Oregon State head coach Jon Reehoorn said. "They didn't let bad shots or results impact their next shot, and it allowed each of them get out of a bad patch in their round much faster."

Fuenmayor birdied five holes, among the tournament's leaders, to tie for his best single round of the year at 4-under 68. Four of his five birdies came in the back nine, including two on par 5s (10 and 15). He also birdied the par-5 eighth hole.

"Mateo was awesome from the start today," Reehoorn said. "Being part of the team at Regionals last year as the sub and seeing what is required was huge for him."

Barry was close behind, posting a 2-under 70 at the par-72, 7,146-yard Traditions Golf Club. He recorded an eagle at the par-5 fifth hole, while picking up two birdies at 15 and 17 (par 4). His eagle was one of just three in the first day of action.

Oregon State, as a team, recorded a 3-under 285 in the first day of action, three shots better than No. 6 SMU. The Beavers, who entered the tournament as the No. 10 seed in the Bryan Regional, are four shots behind No. 4 Georgia. Arizona is No. 1 at 12-under, followed by Pepperdine (9-under) and host Texas A&M (8-under).

Jackson Lake finished at 1-over 73 on Monday, picking up a birdie at the fifth hole. Lake enters Tuesday's action tied for 34th. Alfred Raja earned two birdies of his own, at two par-4 holes: sixth and ninth. Raja is tied for 38th at 2-over 74. Brandon Eyre, meanwhile, is at 7-over 79 and enters Tuesday's play tied for 64th.

OSU, as a team, was just 6-under on par-5 holes, among the best in the first day of action. The Beavers were also 1-over on par-3s, one shot behind SMU.

"There's tons of golf to played," Reehoorn said. "The focus for tomorrow is to simply focus on tomorrow. It's not ti worry about the scores and hopefully get ourselves in position come Wednesday."
