Huskies Go Off With 17 Hits, Take Down Cal Baptist 11-3

May 17, 2022

The Washington Huskies entered Tuesday full of confidence with seven straight wins under their belt, but a non-conference game against a California Baptist team with 31 wins could have quickly brought them back to earth. Instead, the Dawgs continued to roll. They racked up 17 hits, including four by McKay Barney and a 3-run Will Simpson home run, to earn the 11-3 victory.

RHP Josh Emanuels got the start on the mound and delivered a check swing strikeout to get underway. Batter number two went down looking. A deep ball to left drew some concern, but AJ Guerrero collected it on the warning track for the final out.

McKay Barney led off the game with a bunt down the first base line.  The pitcher ranged over and made the play to first, but not before Barney's wheels had him in safely at the bag.  Cam Clayton stepped in next.  With two strikes, Barney took off for second.  Clayton swung through for strike three and the throw down just beat Barney to the base for the second out.  With two down, Johnny Tincher got just under one popping up to second base in shallow right field.

Emaneuls continued to deal in the second, sitting the first batter down swinging. A walk to the next batter followed, however fly outs to Guerrero in shallow left and Urps in shallow right brought the inning to a close.

A line drive base hit to left by Will Simpson got the inning underway. AJ Guerrero was on with a fielder's choice to follow.  Coby Morales stepped in next and drove a shot to left center, but the center fielder ranged over for the grab. With two down, Michael Snyder sent a hard grounder through the left side to put runners on first and second with Christian Dicochea coming to the plate. He sent a hard grounder to the left side, but an impressive dive and throw over by the third baseman ended the second.

A lead off hit past a diving Snyder at third got things started for Cal Baptist.  A hard hit to second was knocked down by Urps, but a throw over to first was all he had time for.  With one down, the next batter sent an easy bouncer to Simpson at first. He gobbled it up for the unassisted put out, but the baserunner over to third on the play. A line drive to right followed to put the Lancers on the board first, 1-0. With a runner now on first, Emanuels escaped further damage as he dealt another swinging strikeout.

Leading off the bottom of the third, a foul ball off the catcher's wrist brought a stop in play. As things got back underway, Urps attempted to sneak a bunt past the concerned defense, but fouled it off for strike three.  Barney followed with a line drive base hit to right.  With Clayton at the plate, he stole second and then made his way to third on a passed ball.  Clayton followed with a walk to put runners on the corners. With one down, Tincher ripped a shot to short.  A fielding error however, plated a run and brought a late throw to first leaving runners on first and second. With the game now tied, Simpson walked to load the bases with one out. Guerrero dug in next, but went down swinging. Then Morales grounded out to second to end the inning.

Lefty Stu Flesland III took over on the mound and got things started with a ground out to Snyder. A line drive over Guerrero's head in left sent the next batter flying around first. Guerrero chased it down at the wall. He fired it in to Clayton, who relayed it on to Urps to get the runner sliding into second. With two down, a swinging strikeout would then retire the side.

Snyder started with a ground out to short. Christian Dicochea dug in next and sent a bullet out to left field for a stand up double. A walk to Urps then triggered a pitching change.  With runners on first and second, Barney drove a line drive to right for his third hit of the day.  The bases were now loaded for Clayton, but he went down swinging for out number two. With two down, Tincher stepped in and drove a 2-RBI base hit into left center to give the Dawgs their first lead of the day. A Simpson grounder to third ended the inning, but not before the Dawgs had made it a 3-1 ballgame.

The Lancer's first batter fouled off the first pitch, then went down looking at the next two. Two fly outs to Morales in right followed to send the Dawgs back up to the plate.

AJ Guerrero smoked a double to right center to lead off the inning. Morales then sent a strong fly ball out to center. It was caught, but Guerrero was able to take third on the play.  With Guerrero 90 feet away, a Snyder grounder up the middle past a diving shortstop put another run on the board for the Dawgs. Dicochea followed lacing one to third, but it was caught for out number two.  Next up, Urps took one off the backside and was awarded first base.  Back at the top of the order with two on and two out, the Lancers got out of the inning with a Barney ground out to second.

RHP Ryan Velazquez took over for Flesland III to start the sixth.  An unassisted ground out to Simpson earned the Dawgs their first out.  With a 2-2 count, the next batter fouled a pair off before flying out to Morales in right.  With two down, a grounder to Urps would retire the side.

Clayton welcomed a new pitcher with a base hit to center. Tincher followed with a walk putting two on for Simpson. He responded by dropping the hammer on a three-run bomb to left center putting the Dawgs up 7-1.  Up next, Guerrero reached on a throwing error by the shortstop and made his way to second base.  Morales walked to put two on with no outs. The Lancers went to their pen once again as Snyder stood on deck.  He then stepped in and sent a high fly ball to right for the first out. Guerrero tagged and took third putting runners on the corners for Dicochea.  After taking ball one, he took a cut at a breaking ball sending a pop out to second in shallow center.  With Urps at the plate, a wild pitch sent Morales to second and Guerrero across the plate for the Husky's eighth run of the game.  Urps would then fly out to center to end the inning.

Velazquez got batter number one to strike out looking.  A fly ball to Barney brought the inning's second out and Snyder chased down a pop fly in foul territory down the third base line for out number three.

Barney led off the inning with a high chopper to third.  A rushing third baseman was unable to field it and Barney was on with a hit.  Clayton follows with a bunt down the third base line that perfectly placed to no even warrant a throw. With two on, Tincher singled through the left side sending Clayton to second and Barney across the dish to make it a 9-1 ballgame. With Clayton now on second and Tincher at first, Simpson drove one up the middle scoring Clayton and sending Tincher to third. Guerrero followed by driving a sacrifice fly to right field scoring Tincher to give the Huskies an 11-1 lead. Morales stepped in next, but went down on strikes. Snyder followed with a single through the left side, but Michael Brown pinch hit for Dicochea and went down swinging as well.

A walk to the lead off batter put one on for CBU. A base hit through the left side followed.  A pinch hitter followed and went down swinging. Pitching Coach Elliott Cribby made his way to the mound and handed the ball over to LHP Bryce Armstrong. Another pinch hitter came in and drew a walk to load the bases.  A base hit to left plated a run for the Lancers.  The next batter sent a ball sky high to right, but Luke Rohleder - a replacement for Morales to start the inning - was able to make the catch.  The runner on third tagged and scored however making the score 11-3.  With two outs on the board and runners on the corners, a lazy fly ball to Simpson at first brought the top half to a close.

Jarred Mazzaferro led off the inning pinch hitting for Urps and drew a walk. Karl Koerper pinch hit for Barney and ripped a hard grounder through the right side to put two on. Next up, Clayton was on with a fielder's choice after an unassisted put out at third.  Ben Smith pinch hit for Tincher, but grounded into a 4-6-3 double play to end the inning.

RHP Calvin Kirchoff came in to start the ninth and delivered a ground out to Snyder at third. Then a ground ball to Simpson brought a toss back to Kirchoff on first for the second out. Finally, the inning's third batter went down swinging at the third pitch he saw to end the game.
