USC’s Stefan Dostanic Wraps NCAA Singles Run In Round of 16
CHAMPAIGN, ILL. — USC junior Stefan Dostanic's debut run in NCAA Individual Championships action came to a close today in the Singles Round of 16. Up against a familiar foe in Stanford's Arthur Fery, No. 7 seeded Dostanic got behind early, and a comeback push would elude the Trojan. Dostanic wraps his junior campaign with a whopping 39 singles wins, marking the most single-season victories by a Trojan since Steve Johnson collected 48 as a junior in 2010-11.
Today's Round of 16 bout between #7 Dostanic and #15 Fery marked the fifth meeting between the two Pac-12 powers this year. Three of those clashes were suspended when dual matches were decided, while Dostanic had posted a straight-set win over Fery when the Trojans and Cardinal met during a Pac-12 match in March at Marks Stadium. Today, Fery was able to get up a break in the opening set, and the Stanford sophomore kept pushing from there. The 6-2, 6-3 loss brought a powerful junior campaign to a close for Dostanic, who took just six losses this season and only this one in straight sets. His 39 wins were more than he had collected in his freshman and sophomore seasons combined, and Dostanic rose as high as No. 2 in the national rankings.
With his No. 7 seeding and journey to the Round of 16, Dostanic has already secured himself ITA All-American status in singles. He also holds that distinction in doubles alongside partner Bradley Frye after the pair earned a No. 5-8 seed into the NCAA Doubles draw before falling in yesterday's Round of 32.
