FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Day one at the NCAA West Preliminary Championships followed the script as well as the Huskies could have hoped, as a trio of UW conference runners-up all earned spots at the NCAA Outdoor final site with great efforts today in Arkansas. Jayden White, Roan Allen, and Kieran Lumb secured top-12 finishes and five more Huskies advanced to quarterfinal rounds on the first of four days of action at John McDonnell Field.
Today featured exclusively men's events, and the women will take over on Thursday. The men will return to wrap up their qualifying rounds on Friday, and the women finish on Saturday.
Top-12 is the goal for all athletes in Arkansas, and three Dawgs made that cut today.
The morning started strong with White earning a second-straight trip to the NCAA final site in the hammer throw. The Pac-12 hammer runner-up, White delivered a toss of 215-1 on his second attempt to safely move into the top-10. He would finish the day eighth overall to move on.
Senior Connor Jost saw his stellar Husky career wrap up with a 21st-place finish in the hammer. He went 207-2 today, and finishes fourth in school history and as a two-time Pac-12 scorer.
Allen, the Pac-12 javelin runner-up in his first season as a Dawg, took care of business quickly as he threw 230-4 in round one, which would put him seventh overall when all was said and done. Allen also had throws of 223-6 and 228-4 on his second and third attempts.
Zach Annanie had a career-best 20th-place finish in the javelin to cap his season. He had a best of 211-3 on his second attempt.
The 10,000-meters was the first and only final and capped off the day. Lumb and Tibebu Proctor were both in the field, eyeing the top-12. Lumb, the school record-holder and Pac-12 runner-up in the 10k, maintained a spot within the top-10 for most of the 25 laps. Towards the end of the race, Lumb was still part of a sizable lead pack, and he came through in 11th overall in 28:49.48 to reach his first NCAA Championships final.
Proctor likely turned in his final performance as the cross country All-American came through in 26th overall in 29:22.57.
Washington went three-for-three in the first round of the men's 1,500-meters, as the field was trimmed from 48 down to 24 with another round to come on Friday. The second heat saw freshman Nathan Green and junior Joe Waskom safely in the top-five to auto-advance. Green ran 3:45.41 for second and Waskom was fourth in 3:45.81. In heat four, Luke Houser joined them as he was second with another controlled run of 3:45.88.
Pac-12 400-meter hurdles champ Cass Elliott clocked a season-best time of 50.49 seconds to advance to the quarterfinals as he looks for a second-straight trip to nationals. Joining him in the quarters is sophomore Jonathan Birchman, who took third in his heat to auto advance in 51.43. Freshman Matthew Wilkinson wrapped his excellent first year in 30th overall in 51.96.
Another freshman finishing up a great year of growth was Anthony Smith in the 200-meters. Smith ran the second-best time of his season, breaking 21-seconds again in 20.97 to place 29th overall.
Junior Sam Van Peursem finished his 2022 today with a 57-9 ½ best toss in the shot put, which placed him 32nd.
