Two Bruin Women Advance in NCAA West Prelims

Fayetteville, Ark. – Two more members of the UCLA Track & Field team remain in contention for NCAA Championship berths, as Shae Anderson and Makenzy Pierre-Webster advanced to Saturday evening's quarterfinal races at the NCAA West Preliminary Rounds.

Anderson finished second in heat two of the 400m, automatically advancing her to the quarterfinals. Anderson's mark of 52.11 was the sixth-fastest time of the day. Pierre-Webster was fourth in heat six of the 200m, but her personal best time of 23.26 was good for 12th overall, earning her a qualifying spot in the quarterfinals. Junior Catherine Leger also competed in the 200m and recorded a mark of 23.79, which was fifth in heat two and 34th overall.

Also competing on the track Thursday night were freshman Rose Pittman, who finished 31st overall in the 800m with a time of 2:08.11, senior Gwyn George, who placed 33rd in the 1500m with a 4:24.26, and senior Alyssa Bautista, who placed 43rd in the 10,000m with a time of 35:56.36.

In the field events, Jillian Stafford and Lyvante Su'emai kicked off the meet by competing in the hammer. Stafford finished 41st overall, throwing 54.56m (179-0) on her initial throw. Su'emai fouled all three attempts in the hammer but came back in the evening to finish 24th in the shot put, recording a best of 15.93m (52-3.25) on her second throw. Senior Lauren McFall finished 27th in the javelin with a throw of 46.09m (151-2).

The Bruin men finish up on Friday with afternoon action in the discus (Aidan Elbettar and Ugonna Ikejiofor) and high jump (Sean Lee). In the evening, both relays will compete, along with Peter Herold, Munir Kabbara and Darius Riley in the 3000 Steeplechase and Matthew DeRoos in the triple jump. Cameron Reynolds and Ismail Turner will race in the 400m quarterfinals, seeking a NCAA berth. The top three performances from each quarterfinal heat, plus the three next fastest times, will advance to Eugene for the NCAA Championships.
