FAYETTEVILLE, Arkansas - Day three of the NCAA West Prelims was HUGE for Sun Devil Track and Field! Seven more men qualified for the NCAA Championships, bringing ASU's total to 11 with one more day of competition to go. Freshman Ralford Mullings, the No. 3-ranked discus thrower in the country, punched his ticket with a second place finish, and Turner Washington is set to defend his crown. On the track, the freshman phenom Dayton Carlson ran a PR in the 800m and secured his spot at Eugene, as did fellow harrier Vincent Mauri in the 5K. Sprinters Gamali Felix and Justin Robinson qualified in the 400m, and high jumper Jeremy Cody rounded out the qualifying group with back-to-back PRs. Of ASU's seventh qualifiers Friday, five of them recorded personal records.
Jeremy Cody had the Maroon and Gold faithful rocking in the stands. He kicked off ASU's day at John McDonnell Field by upping his lifetime best in back-to-back jumps, finishing at 2.18m/7-1.75 to tie for 10th in program history. Mullings and Washington then cruised into qualifying position with their respective second and ninth-place finishes in the plate throw.
Eyes then turned to running events where Felix ran a 45.18 to PR, finished sixth overall, and moved himself to ninth in program history. Robinson was right behind him with a 45.30 PR and ninth place finish.
The distance group rounded out the day with Carlson, the No. 1 recruit out of Arizona, continuing his legendary freshman season with a huge 1:47.79 PR in the 800m. That time ranks fourth in program history and is ASU's first 800m top-10 update since 2012. Mauri then ran a 13:39.13 PR in the 5K. He remains third all-time with the result.
The women close out the NCAA West Prelims Saturday.
