Golf Completes Second Round of NCAA Championship at Grayhawk

May 28, 2022

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. – On a hot and windy afternoon at the Grayhawk Golf Club, the Utah men's golf team completed round two of the NCAA Championships posting a 311 (+31) to enter Sunday's third round in 29th place.

"Tough day for sure! We haven't been in this situation before and we didn't handle it well. We have been good this year at minimizing our mistakes, however today we were not.," head coach Garrett Clegg said. "We are the same group of guys that played great last week and golf doesn't come and go in one week. We just haven't made the adjustments this week, but hopefully tomorrow we will end our season on a high note."

High scores were posted across the board as only two teams were able to finish their rounds in the red, both teeing it up early in the morning on Saturday. On a course that continues to play tougher each and every day, the Utes have some work in front of them as the field will be cut in half after the conclusion of the third-round tomorrow.

Javier Barcos led the team this afternoon playing steady golf on each side of the course, posting a pair of 38's (+3) to shoot a second-round score 76 (+6) and move to 7-over (147, T-53rd) for the championship. Starting on the front nine, Barcos opened with a bogey and went on to par the next four holes before he recorded a double bogey on the par four sixth. Barcos got back on track parring the following three and after making the turn, endured a tough stretch of three bogeys through four holes. He would end his round on a strong note with five consecutive pars.

Blake Tomlinson started his day off slow with two bogeys and a triple, but would pick up some steam through the rest of his front nine with five pars and a chip-in birdie on the par three eighth hole. On his back nine, Tomlinson parred six holes with two bogeys and a double to shoot 8-over (78) and bring him to a tournament total of 150 (+10). He enters the third round of play T-85th.

Tristan Mandur battled during his second round, posting a front nine 38 (+3) with a birdie on the par four third hole, five pars, two bogeys and a double. He found his second and final birdie of the afternoon on the par four 14th to go along with two bogeys and a triple on his back nine to shoot a 77 (+7) and total 152 (+12) through two rounds of play.

It was a tale of two sides for Martín León as he recorded three bogeys and two doubles on his front nine to make the turn at 7-over. Leon went on to par seven straight holes on the back nine but didn't end his round how he'd like, bogeying the 17th and double bogeying the 18th to turn in an 80 (+10) – one shot better than his opening round score.

Braxton Watts saw a tough day on the course with seven bogeys, two doubles and a dreaded nine on the par four ninth hole to shoot an 86 (+16) in his second round of the championships.
