MERCER LAKE, N.J. – The Oregon State men's rowing team had two boats in action during the second day of IRA Championships, Saturday in New Jersey.
"The question is: would you rather pull a 5:57 and get 3rd or a 5:52 and get 4th in your semi?" said Oregon State head coach Gabe Winkler. "Most likely, you would want to get the higher placing so you could fight for the better ranks. But completing a near perfect race, the best these guys have done all season, at the 14th fastest time of the morning and to still get relegated to the D final hurts. These guys put together what I would say was everything that we worked on in one 2,000m but came off the water gutted. They should not feel like they messed up in any way. This one will be memorable and it makes you a stronger individual. Tomorrow is for the 5th year seniors and all the ergs and strokes taken over this year."
The Beavers' Varsity 8 narrowly missed booking a spot in the third-level final, finishing fourth in their semi-final with a time of 5:52.2 – less than two seconds behind the third-place finisher. Oregon State will now wrap up its season in the fourth level final at 6 a.m. PT on Sunday.
Oregon State's 2V8 placed fifth in its semi-final, and will also head to the fourth-level final on Sunday. The OSU 3V8 was not in action Saturday, and will finish up its IRA run in tomorrow's third level final.
The Beavers have competed in every IRA Championship since 2013, and have finished as high as fourth at the event (2002).
