EUGENE, Oregon - Arizona State track and field has some of the best freshmen in the country! Day three of the NCAA Track and Field Championships saw Dayton Carlson finish sixth in the 800m in a program record 1:46.72, and Ralford Mullings threw 62.46m/204-11 to earn bronze in the discus. Carlson was the fastest freshman at the meet, while Mullings was third best as the top-3 in the discus were all first-year student-athletes. Both of the Sun Devils earned first team All-America honors with their finishes and bring ASU's trophy count to six.
The Sun Devils close out the NCAA Championships Saturday afternoon with Jorinde van Klinken in the women's discus. The defending NCAA Champion has the nation's best mark at 64.75m/212-5, a good 14 feet ahead of Kansas' Alexandra Emilianov (60.51m/198-6). Van Klinken throws at 2:05 p.m. PDT.

Gilbert, Arizona'a Dayton Carlson has had a legendary first year. After opening the 2022 outdoor season with a 1:50.96, he went on to shave over four seconds off his time. He ran four consecutive personal records en route to last night's finish, kicking things off with a 1:48.18 at the NCAA West Prelims first round, then a 1:47.79 in the quarterfinals, a 1:47.45 in the semifinals, and finally his 1:46.72 in the finals. He surpassed Pete Richardson's 1:46.95 from 1984 for the top spot in ASU's annals.
Kingston, Jamaica native Ralford Mullings has an extremely bright future ahead. He opened his career with a 62.47m.204' 11" at the Baldy Castillo Invitational in March which immediately put him second in program history behind Turner Washington (66.26m/217-04), then he went on to throw 65.39m/214-06 at the Mt. SAC Relays. He never surpassed 65m but he climbed into third overall at the NCAA Championships in just three throws, the 62.46m coming in round four. Virginia's Claudio Romero and California's Mykolas Alekna were ahead of Mullings at 66.17m/217-1 and 66.15m/217-0, respectively.
