Women Wrap Up NCAA Competition

Jun 11, 2022

EUGENE, OREGON – California track & field concluded its historic season on Saturday at University of Oregon's Hayward Field with the women's final day of competition – and fourth day overall – at the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships. At the end of the afternoon, Florida's women had scored a total of 74 points to bring home their second team trophy of the meet, followed by Texas (64 points) and Kentucky (50 points). Cal finished in a tie for 21st with 12 points – its most since the 2007 Championships.

"This was a fun year," said Director of Track & Field/Cross Country Robyne Johnson. "To end with an experience like this helps us in every way possible – team morale, recruiting, fan engagement. It's all about using these experiences as momentum going forward. We want to make even more of a splash next year."

Sophomore Busola Akinduro was the Bears' lone representative competing on Saturday, entering the triple jump contest and posting a best leap of 12.34m (40-6).

In total, the Bears had 13 qualifiers at this year's NCAA Championships – and 6 of them (Ezinne Abba, Mykolas Alekna, Josh Johnson, Iffy Joyner, Anna Purchase and Camryn Rogers) walked away with All-American honors.

Until this year, Cal had not had four First Team All-American throwers since 1922 – the very first NCAA Championships ever held. This year's group, which Assistant Coach Mohamad Saatara has called "the best (he's) ever coached", gave Bears fans plenty to be excited about, including an all-time NCAA record set by Alekna and a third hammer National Championship from Rogers.
