Large Group Of Huskies Headed To Henley Royal Regatta

The largest assemblage of Huskies ever to make the intercontinental trip to the United Kingdom will compete at the annual Henley Royal Regatta, beginning next week at Henley–on–Thames, England.
 
Washington will be represented in at least five men's and four women's competitions, as Huskies will vie for nine different trophies at the world's most celebrated annual regatta.
 
Here is a rundown of the nine events in which Washington crews and individuals will compete. There may be other UW alumni who are rowing for various clubs. Any such discoveries will be added to these lists:
 
Women's Events:
The Remenham Challenge Cup (8+) – 9 entries – begins Wednesday, June 29
The Island Challenge (8+) – 22 entries – begins Wednesday, June 29
The Hambleden Pairs Challenge Cup (2-) – 12 entries – begins Thursday, June 30
The Princess Royal Challenge Cup (1x) – 16 entries – begins Thursday, June 30
 
Men's Events:
The Temple Challenge Cup (8+) – 32 entries – begins Tuesday, June 29
The Visitors' Challenge Cup (4-) – 16 entries – begins Wednesday, June 29
Prince Albert Challenge Cup (4+) – 16 entries – begins Wednesday, June 29
The Double Sculls Challenge Cup (2x) – 12 entries – begins Thursday, June 30
The Diamond Challenge Sculls (1x) – 16 entries – begins Thursday, June 30
 
Of those nine events, all but the Remenham Cup will have their final list of entries compiled via qualification races prior to the start of the actual regatta. Some crews are required to qualify and others are places directly in the draw.
 
UW crews will be required to qualify for the draw, in races held on Friday, June 24, in just three of nine race categories, having been granted an automatic berth in the others.
 
Washington's Shakira Mirfin and Madi Frampton will comprise one of six pairs racing for a spot in the draw for The Hambleden Pairs Challenge Cup, with the top three of those six making it. UW alumna Kirstyn Goodger, a veteran New Zealand national team member, and her pairs partner, have already been given a place in the final draw for that trophy.
 
In the Princess Royal Challenge Cup, UW alumna and current assistant coach Tabea Schendekehl, a longtime German national team rower, will need to be one of the five fastest scullers out of 12 to qualify.
 
On the men's side, UW's double sculls duo of Steve Rosts and Adam Krol will face a tough task to qualify for the Double Sculls Challenge Cup, where just three of 16 crews in the qualifying will earn a spot.
 
The draw for the 2022 regatta will be held on Saturday, June 25, setting the schedule for the regatta. At Henley, crews are paired in match races and compete in a knockout tournament on the 2,112–meter race course on the Thames. In each case, the winning crews advance until a champion in named in each category.
 
The regatta hosts an excellent live video stream of all events on its YouTube channel. Once the draw has been held, the full schedule will be posted on this page, as well as linked on UW Rowing's various social media channels.
 
Washington has a long history with Henley, which began to include women's races in 2000.
While the regatta itself is much older – the event was first held in 1839 – the UW has made history on the Thames dating back more than six decades.
 
Sixty–four years ago, Washington's '58 men's crew, in the UW's first trip to Henley, lost in the final of the Grand Challenge Cup, but the Huskies gained their revenge over the Trud Leningrad Club (the Soviet national team) a few weeks later, in the historic rematch in Moscow, one of the marquee events in the history of UW athletics.
 
In 1977, Washington's men won the Grand Challenge Cup, the top prize at Henley, beating the British National Team (rowing as the Leander and Thames Tradesmen). The Huskies were the first American college crew from a non–Ivy League school to win Henley's oldest and most esteemed trophy.
 
In 2018, a UW men's eight won the Temple Challenge Cup, breaking the event record by five seconds. That year was the most recent that UW has raced at Henley, as both the Husky men and women competed.
 
In 2000, Washington won the first open women's eight race (then called the Henley Prize), a race in which they'll compete again this year under its current name, The Remenham Challenge Cup.
