Cal Backstrokers On Display On Day Five

Spain's Hugo González reached his third semifinal of the 2022 FINA World Championships on Wednesday.

BUDAPEST, Hungary – California graduate Ryan Murphy ('17) positioned himself to earn a third medal at the 2022 FINA World Championships and was one of three Golden Bears to compete in the 200-meter backstroke on Wednesday at Duna Arena.
 
After advancing through prelims earlier in the day with a 1:56.96 finish, Murphy threw down 1:55.43 for the fastest time in the semifinal field. He will go for gold as the top seed in Thursday's final, having already earned silver in the 100m back and gold in the 4x100 mixed medley relay.
 
Hugo González ('22, Spain) joined Murphy in the 200m back semifinals and placed 13th overall with a 1:59.05 finish. The Spaniard secured a spot in his third semifinal of the world championships – he finished 11th in the 100m back and 12th in the 200m individual medley – with a 1:59.61 effort in prelims.
 
Rising sophomore Ziyad Saleem (Sudan) placed 22nd overall in the event, touching the wall in 2:01.05 in prelims.

Thursday's schedule at the 2022 FINA World Championships will see Murphy set his sights on his third medal of the week in the 200m back while Trenton Julian is expected to be a part of Team USA's 4x200m freestyle relay squad.
 
Prelims for the pool competitions will begin daily from June 18-25 at 12 a.m. PT and will be streamed on FINA.org. Finals will be broadcasted on Olympic Channel beginning at 9 a.m. PT daily.
