Jun 22, 2022

SALT LAKE CITY – Utah men's golf head coach Garrett Clegg has announced the hiring of Spencer Dunaway, who will serve as an assistant coach for the program. Dunaway joins the Utes after one season at Utah Tech as an assistant coach.

"I am thrilled to announce that Spencer has accepted the position of assistant men's golf coach and will begin working here at the U this week," Clegg said. "Spencer has an incredible passion for the game of golf and has shown in a short time that he knows what it takes to be a successful coach. I'm excited that he will be joining our program at the U and I'm confident he will be a huge part of helping each of our players improve and continue to push our program forward!"

In his first coaching stint with the Trail Blazers, Dunaway helped guide the men's golf team to three top-10 team finishes, highlighted by a fifth place showing at the Southern Utah Pizza Hut Pat Hicks Invitational to open the spring season at the Sunbrook Golf Course in St. George.

"I am so grateful to coach Clegg for this opportunity," Dunaway said. "Not everyone gets an opportunity to be a Pac-12 assistant coach at 25 years old. I have worked incredibly hard this past year and I am grateful for Coach Sutterfield at Utah Tech and all that I was able to learn. I am excited to continue to learn from coach Clegg. He has built a national championship caliber program and I'm looking forward to helping him grow this program even more. I can't wait to get to work and get after it. I know what this program is capable of and I am excited to be a part of it."

Before making his way to Utah Tech, Dunaway saw a successful four-year collegiate playing career at BYU where he finished with a career 73.89 stroke average, nine top-20 finishes (Three top-five's) and one tournament victory. Dunaway captured his lone win at the 2020 San Diego State Coronado Invitational as an individual, posting 72-69-71 to total 212 (-4) and finish in a tie for first.

He helped lead the Cougars to a 2017 West Coast Conference championship and three-straight NCAA Regional berths, including a pair of national championship appearances in 2018 and 2019. Dunaway was a 2015-16 Freshman All-WCC team selection and earned honorable mention All-WCC honors in 2016-17. In addition, he was a 2019 and 2021 Utah State Amateur semifinalist and won the 2021 Hawaii State Amateur title. In 2018, he qualified for the United States Amateur held at Pebble Beach.

Dunaway graduated from BYU in 2020 with a bachelor's degree in Psychology.

A native of Mililani, Hawaii, Dunaway was named the Hawaii Gatorade Player of the Year in 2014-15 after capturing the Hawaii Golf State Championship for Kamehameha High School. A four-time letter winner, Dunaway also captured the scoring title in 2014 and 2015.

Spencer has a lovely wife named Lauren and is the son of Reuben Dunaway and Lei Fountain. He has one brother named Matthew and when not on the course, he enjoys watching movies, playing pickleball and boating.
