LOS ANGELES – USA Baseball on Wednesday announced that UCLA freshman pitchers Ethan Flanagan and Alonzo Tredwell have both been invited to the 2022 USA Baseball Collegiate National Team Training Camp.
The USA Baseball Collegiate National Team Training Camp will feature approximately 50 of the top non-draft-eligible players from around the country for a five-game Stars vs. Stripes intrasquad series in North Carolina from Jun. 30 to Jul. 4.
Following training camp, USA Baseball will name a final, 26-man Collegiate National Team Roster that will represent the U.S. at Honkbalkweek Harleem in the Netherlands from Jul. 9-15.
Flanagan and Tredwell, who both picked up Freshman All-America honors in 2022, have a chance to add to the rich tradition of UCLA Baseball with the Collegiate National Team.
UCLA has previously had 22 players on the Collegiate National Team, dating back to 1979. Outfielder Garrett Mitchell (2019) was the most-recent Bruin to don the red, white, and blue, and other Team USA alums include Gerrit Cole, Brandon Crawford, Troy Glaus, David Berg, James Kaprielian, and Adam Plutko.
Flanagan was one of the most flexible and effective pitchers on the UCLA staff this season, finishing with a 3-0 record, 3.28 ERA and 76 strikeouts in 60 1 /3 innings over 25 appearances. The southpaw was a dominant swingman in the first half of the season – giving up just one run over his first nine appearances and recording a pair of saves – before settling into the Saturday starter role down the stretch. Flanagan had a season-high eight strikeouts in just 3 2/3 innings in his NCAA debut against Pepperdine on Feb. 22, combined on a 19-strikeout one-hitter against Long Beach State on Mar. 1, and went four innings without allowing an earned run in UCLA's NCAA Regional game against Southeastern Louisiana on Jun. 4.
UCLA's closer, Tredwell went 4-1 with a 2.11 ERA and six saves over 25 appearances. One of the top zone-fillers on the squad, Tredwell struck out 62 batters against just six walks in 47 innings. The Coto de Caza, Calif. native had a sub-2.00 ERA for most of the season, and he finished with the best ERA on the squad (among pitchers with 35+ IP). Standout outings include Feb. 22 (seven strikeouts in just 2 2/3 innings), Mar. 6 (three inning of one hit-ball against then-No. 1 Texas), and May 3 (six strikeouts, no hits over 3 1/3 innings at Long Beach State).
The opening game of the Stars vs. Stripes series is set for Jun. 30 at the USA Baseball Training Complex in Cary, N.C, while games two through four will be played at the Durham Bulls Athletic Park in Durham. N.C. Training camp concludes with the series finale on Jul. 4 at Truist Field in Charlotte, N.C.
All five games of the series will be available to watch on USABaseball.com.
