2021-22: Season in Review

Jun 24, 2022

STANFORD, Calif. - Stanford concluded its 2021-22 campaign at the CSN National Championships, competing admirably throughout a winless season. The Cardinal faced off against six top-10 opponents while playing several matches short-handed either due to lack of depth, injuries or health and safety protocols within the program.

CSA National Team Championships
Seeded No. 2 in the Walker Cup (C Division) at the CSA National Championships, the Cardinal (0-11) dropped its three tournament matches, fighting hard in a 5-4 loss to Wesleyan in a consolation match to close out the season.

Si Yi Ma swept her three matches over the weekend and closed out her debut season winning 10 of 11 contests overall.

The Cardinal dropped 6-3 decisions to Hamilton College and Middlebury College in the opening rounds, with the top three spots in its lineup accounting for the only scoring.

Si Yi Ma's Breakthrough Season

Si Yi Ma closed out her debut season at the CSA National Individual Championships by capturing the Holleran North Division title and earning Second-Team All-American honors along the way.

Ma defeated Yale's Christy Tin Yan Lau 11-8, 11-7, 11-5 in the title match and surrendered only two games while sweeping all four matches of the second-tier Holleran North Division.

Ma is Stanford's first champion since Madeleine Gill, who also claimed the Holleran Cup crown in 2013.

Producing a team-best 14-1 record this season, Ma earned Second-Team All-America accolades, following up Elena Wagenmans (2019-20) and Casey Wong (2017-18) as the program's most recent selections.

CSA National Individual Championships

Lucia Bicknell was Stanford's other competitor at the CSA National Individual Championships, dropping her first match in the Holleran East Division before winning a match in the consolation draw.
