BUDAPEST, Hungary – California alumni Ryan Murphy ('17) and Trenton Julian ('22) capped the 2022 FINA World Championships by winning silver medals for the United States in the men's 4x100m medley relay on Saturday at Duna Arena.
Murphy, one of Team USA's four swimming captains, hauled in his fourth medal of the world championships – he finished with two gold and two silver throughout the eight-day span in Budapest – as he clocked 52.51 seconds on the leadoff leg of the Americans' runner-up finish in the 4x100m medley relay (3:27.79). Team USA finished 0.28 seconds behind world champion Italy (3:27.51).
Earlier in the day, Julian delivered a 51.35 butterfly split in prelims to help the Americans earn the top seed in the relay final (2:44.62). By swimming on the relay in prelims, Julian was awarded his second medal of the world championships; he won gold two days prior as a part of Team USA's 4x200m freestyle relay squad.
Murphy and Julian contributed to USA Swimming's 45 total medals at the world championships, the most ever awarded to a nation in the pool competition.
Eight current and former Cal swimmers competed through the eight days of pool competitions at the 2022 FINA World Championships.
