Rogers Named Cal’s First-Ever Finalist For The Bowerman

Jun 27, 2022

BERKELEY – For California track & field's Camryn Rogers, the accolades just keep on coming.

One year after she reached semifinalist status for The Bowerman, the nation's most prestigious track & field award – and one week after she and teammate Mykolas Alekna were named 2022 semifinalists – Rogers went one step further as she was named Cal's first-ever Bowerman finalist, male or female.

"I feel so honored and proud to be named a Bowerman finalist and represent Coach Mo (Saatara) and the Golden Bears," said Rogers. "I'm immensely grateful to have had the best people by my side over my entire collegiate career here at Cal. This achievement is a recognition of those incredible individuals who have pushed and inspired me to always be reaching to better myself."

After finishing the indoor season with a third-place finish in the weight throw at the NCAA Indoor Championships, posting a school-record (and Canadian-record) toss of 24.06m (78-11.25), Rogers put together a landmark outdoor season that saw her break her own collegiate record no fewer than three times on the way to her third straight NCAA hammer title, reaching a distance of 77.67m (254-10) at said Outdoor Championships. She also accumulated five separate meet records and three facility records throughout the season, which earned her West Region Women's Field Athlete of the Year honors, and now owns the top 10 throws in collegiate women's hammer history.

Rogers also won the Canadian hammer title over this past weekend, posting a top throw of 75.33m (247-1) – sixth-longest in her career – to further cement her legacy as the nation's all-time finest women's hammer thrower.

Winners are selected from a combination of The Bowerman panel (media, statisticians, administrators and past winners) ballots, fan voting, and USTFCCCA member voting. If selected, Rogers would be the first-ever thrower to win either the men's or women's award.

The other two finalists are Anna Hall (Florida, multis) and Abby Steiner (Kentucky, sprints).

Online fan voting at opens on Tuesday, June 28 at 1:00 p.m. PT and closes on Thursday, June 30 at 11:00 a.m.

The Bowerman award will be presented on Thursday, Dec. 15 at the Gaylord Rockies Resort & Convention Center in Aurora, Colorado.
