UW Wins Four Races On Day Two At Henley Royal Regatta

HENLEY-ON-THAMES, U.K. – Four Washington men's and women's crews won their races Wednesday on the second day of the 2022 Henley Royal Regatta.
 
Two Husky men's fours won their first races of the regatta, while the UW women's program made its 2022 Henley debut with a win in one of its two eights. Additionally, the men's eight that won its opening race in The Temple Challenge Cup on Tuesday, won again today.
 
Washington opened its morning with a round-of-16 race vs. a crew from University College, Dublin (Ireland) in The Prince Albert Challenge Cup, for coxed fours. The UW crew won the race comfortably, officially crossing the finish line two and one-quarter lengths in front of the Irish boat.
 
That Husky four next faces a crew from the University of California in a quarterfinal race, Thursday at 2:45 a.m. PT.
 
Next for Washington was a second-round race for the Huskies' men's eight in The Temple Challenge Cup, where the Huskies took on a lightweight crew from Yale in the second round. In a close race, the Huskies held the advantage throughout and fended off the Elis to win by a half-length.
 
In the quarterfinals, Washington's men will race against a crew from D.S.R. Laga of the Netherlands, on Friday (time TBD).
 
The third Husky race Wednesday was the first of the regatta for the Washington women, as one of two UW eights at Henley competed in The Island Challenge Cup against the University of Edinburgh (Scotland) "A" crew. Washington's eight led the entire way and fought through a headwind to beat the Scots by a length and a quarter.
 
The Huskies next take on U.S.R. Triton, from the Netherlands, in the Island round of 16. That race is Thursday at 8:00 a.m. PT.
 
Washington capped its four-for-four day with a win in The Visitors' Challenge Cup, a men's coxless fours event in its 175th year of existence. The veteran UW crew, comprised of four members of the Huskies' 2022 varsity eight – three of them All-Americans – opened up a big lead as both crews fought through windy conditions throughout the 2,112-meter course. The UW rowers eased through the final portion of the race and won by two lengths.
 
That UW four will next face a crew from France on Friday, at a time to be announced after Thursday's races are completed.
 
Thursday, more UW entries will make their racing debut at Henley. The pair of Madi Frampton and Shakira Mirfin will row against an Irish duo in The Hambleden Pairs Challenge Cup at 2:50 a.m. PT. In The Double Sculls Challenge Cup, Steve Rosts and Adam Krol will take on a British double, at 1:45 a.m. PT.
 
In single sculls events, UW alumna Tabea Schendekehl was meant to have faced a stiff challenge in The Princess Royal Challenge Cup, where she was matched against Austria's Magdalena Lobnig, the 2020 Olympic bronze medalist. However, Lobnig withdrew due to injury, and Schendekehl will simply have to complete the course unopposed to move on to the next round. Her start is scheduled for 11:20 a.m. PT. 
 
In the men's single sculls competition, The Diamond Challenge Sculls, UW alumnus and U.S. National Team member Ben Davison will face Maciej Zawojski of Poland, in a race scheduled for 6:30 a.m. PT.
 
Friday, the other Washington women's eight will row for the first time, in The Remenham Challenge Cup, the top event for women's eights. The field for that event also has a U.S. National Team entry that includes UW alumna Jessica Thoennes.
 
Another UW alum, Peter Lancashire, will also race Friday, stroking a Leander Club eight in the Ladies' Challenge Plate. Finally, on Saturday, three former Husky oarsmen – Chris Carlson, Andrew Gaard and Pieter Quinton – will row in the U.S. crew in the Grand Challenge Cup, Henley's top men's eights race.
