Bears Eight Boat Set For Henley Regatta Finals
HENLEY, UK – California men's rowing saw another successful day of competition at the historic Henley Royal Regatta in London on Saturday.
"I'm really happy with how the guys raced today," head coach Scott Frandsen said. "They were able to have a clean start and edge out to the middle of the race. Dartmouth definitely pushed – and we expected that – but we were able to defend their move and control the race to the win, which was the goal."
The V8+ battled Dartmouth in windy conditions on Saturday evening in the Ladies' Plate Challenge Cup semifinals race. In a tight race, the Bears pushed ahead at the start and maintained the lead down the duration of the course. They ultimately defeated their opponent by one-third of a length with a time of 6:08, advancing them to the next round of competition. The lineup consisted of Luca Vieira (cox), Iwan Hadfield (stroke), Elliott Kemp, Tim Roth, Ollie Maclean, Gennaro di Mauro, Angus Dawson, Olav Molenaar, and Campbell Crouch (bow).
Cal men's rowing will have two boats return to action tomorrow for the final day of competition at the Henley Royal Regatta. The V8+ will take on the Leander Club in the Ladies' Plate Challenge Cup finals.
After their day off on Saturday, the coxed four will also return to the water for the Prince Albert Cup finals. They will face the Oxford Brookes "A" boat on Sunday afternoon. The 4+ will be composed of Illiad Izadi (cox), Tommy Barrell (stroke), Fred Roper, Balthasar Issa, and Evan Lane (bow).
