Zach Charbonnet (24)

DALLAS - The PwC SMU Athletic Forum announced on Wednesday that UCLA's Zach Charbonnet has been named to the preseason candidate list for the 2022 Doak Walker Award. The Forum annually presents the award to the nation's top college running back.
Charbonnet led Pac-12 rushers last season with seven 100-yard games on his way to racking up 1,137 yards on the ground. He was No. 2 in the conference in rushing yards per game (94.8) and No. 6 in the league in all-purpose yards per game (111.7). Charbonnet ranked No. 22 in the nation in rushing yards (1,137) and in rushing TDs (13). He had multiple catches in six games and is UCLA's leading returning receiver (24 catches) for 2022. The Associated Press voted him the 2021 Pac-12 Newcomer of the Year. He was a second-team All-Pac-12 selection by the conference coaches.

Charbonnet rushed for 950 yards and 12 touchdowns in two seasons at Michigan before he transferred to UCLA for the 2021 season. He appeared in 18 games for the Wolverines and made nine starts.
The PwC SMU Athletic Forum Board of Directors will name ten semifinalists in November, and three finalists, as voted on by the Doak Walker Award National Selection Committee, will be announced later that month. The committee will cast a second vote in December to determine the recipient. The National Selection Committee consists of past recipients, former NFL All-Pro and college All-America running backs, media members and selected special representatives. The recipient of the 2022 Doak Walker Award will be announced live on The Home Depot College Football Awards in December.

The award is named for SMU's three-time All-America running back Doak Walker. It is the only major collegiate award that requires all candidates to be in good academic standing and on schedule to graduate within one year of other students of the same classification.

The Bruins open the 2022 season with three straight non-conference home contests. The campaign begins on Sept. 3 against Bowling Green at Rose Bowl Stadium in a 11:30 a.m. PT kickoff that airs on Pac-12 Network. A Sept. 10 visit by Alabama State follows, with the Pac-12 Network-televised matchup slated for a 2 p.m. start. Pac-12 Network also provides coverage of the Sept. 17 battle with South Alabama, beginning at 11 a.m. To place a $99 deposit on 2022 UCLA football season tickets, CLICK HERE.
