Fontenot Named To Doak Walker Watch List
DALLAS—Senior Alex Fontenot was one of 74 players named to the watch list for the 2022 Doak Walker Award, presented to the nation's top running back, the PwC SMU Athletic Forum announced Wednesday.
Fontenot has been named to the watch list each of the last three seasons. He was CU's leading rusher in 2019 as a sophomore, leading the Buffs in rushing in 2019 with 185 rushes for 874 yards and five touchdowns. He was named the team's Most Improved Offensive Player and likely would have had a 1,000-yard season if not for an injury that forced him to miss one game and parts of a couple others.
Fontenot was injured prior to the COVID-shortened 2020 season and missed the entire season, and came back in 2021 to rush 96 times for 326 yards and a team-best five touchdowns, adding 13 catches for 80 yards and another score.
In his career, Fontenot has 292 rushes for 1,244 yards and 11 touchdowns and 40 receptions for 212 yards and a touchdown, giving him 1,456 yards from scrimmage and 12 total touchdowns. His 1,244 rushing yards ranks 40th in CU history and his 40 career receptions is tied for 74th in program annals.
Wednesday is day three of two weeks of releases from the National Collegiate Football Awards Association. Thursday will be the release of the Biletnikoff Award (top receiver) while the John Mackey Award (top tight end) and Rimington Trophy (top center) will be released Friday.
