Women's Golf Achieves High WGCA Team GPA Ranking

Jul 20, 2022

CORAL SPRINGS, Fla. – The Sun Devil Women's Golf program continues to be recognized for their academic achievements, as the WGCA announced their Scholar Team GPA Awards.

Arizona State finished No. 18 in the Division I Top-25 Team GPA Rankings thanks to an incredible effort in the classroom. The team ended the 2021-22 school year with a 3.81 GPA, earning them a spot in the Top-25 for the fourth-time in program history. Head Coach Missy Farr-Kaye's team was not only the highest ranked team out of the Pac-12 Conference, they were the highest ranked team that made the NCAA Championship, as her program consistently produces greatness on and off the course.

"This is a tremendous accomplishment for our young women," Coach Farr-Kaye remarked. "We are extremely proud of the effort from our whole team in the classroom this year. It is something we prioritized before the season and they worked hard to achieve this ranking. We couldn't have done it without the guidance of our academic coach, Anthony Mendes, and the entire support staff."

Since the award was established back in 2004-05, the WGCA has honored the best teams in the GPA category. In 2017-18, the WGCA began separating the Top-25 teams in each division (Division I, II and III). The Sun Devils were previously ranked in the Top-25 following the 2009-10, 2011-12, and 2017-18 seasons. The best finish came back in 2017-18, when ASU finished No. 5 in the nation thanks to a 3.79 GPA. With 250 teams competing at the Division I level, the Top-25 distinction puts Sun Devil Women's Golf in elite territory.

The No. 18 GPA ranking comes on the heels of Alexandra Forsterling, Alessandra Fanali, Amanda LinnerAshley Menne, and Grace Summerhays being ecognized individually earlier in the offseason Itheir efforts and achievements in the classroom. They were selected as WGCA All-American Scholars. The criteria for selection to the All-American Scholar Team requires a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.50, guidelines that make it one of most prestigious Academic All-American Teams in collegiate athletics.

The academic recongitions continue to pour in for Sun Devil Women's Golf, as five from the squad earned a spot on the 2022 Pac-12 Spring Academic Honor Roll. Alessandra Fanali, Alexandra Forsterling, Amanda Linner, Breyana Matthews, and Ashley Menne all met the requirements of a 3.3-or-above GPA and at least one year in residence at the institution. All five Sun Devils that were eligible for the distinction landed on the Honor Roll, with ASU being one of only two teams in the Pac-12 who could make that claim.
