Eight Golden Bears To Compete At World Championships

Jul 22, 2022
The Bears will send eight athletes to next week's U23 and U19 World Championships in Italy.

BERKELEY – Eight members of the Cal men's rowing team are set to compete for their respective countries in next week's Under-23 and Under-19 World Championships at Lake Varese in Varese, Italy.

All-American Angus Dawson and Jamie Arnold will row for Australia in the U23 eight. All-Pac-12 honoree Campbell Crouch will row in the U23 coxless four for New Zealand. Frederik Breuer and Leo Brahms will row in the U23 coxed four for Germany.

Incoming Bears Emilio Pappalettera, Pablo Moreno and Will Deutchman will all row for their respective countries as well. Pappalettera will row in the U23 Italian eight, Moreno for Spain in the U23 quadruple sculls, and Deutchman will be competing for the United States in the four at the U-19 Championships.

"It is great to have such a large contingent of our current and incoming student-athletes racing at the U23 and U19 World Championships," said head coach Scott Frandsen. "It shows great depth in our program and diversity of training as these young athletes are able to jump into small boats and earn these spots to represent their countries. It is difficult to replicate the experience of racing at these international regattas and that can only help our team as we shift the focus from a successful season this past year to a completely new campaign in 2022/23."

Dawson and Arnold both rowed for Australia in the 2022 World Rowing Cup III where they helped the eight boat take eighth. This is Crouch's second appearance in the coxless four for New Zealand, he was in the coxless four that finished second at the 2018 World Rowing Junior Championships.

Breuer last rowed for Germany at the 2019 Junior World Championships where he helped his four-boat win gold. He then followed up that result, finishing 3rd in the U23 German eight at the U23 European Championships in 2021.

The World Championships will take place July 25-31 in Varese, Italy. Highlights and video of the event can be viewed at WorldRowing.com or by clicking here.
