Jul 22, 2022
Tight end Michael Ezeike (86)

New York, N.Y. – UCLA's Michael Ezeike was named to the 2022 John Mackey Award Preseason Watch List on Friday in an announcement made by The Friends of John Mackey. The Mackey Award is presented annually to the most outstanding tight end in college football.

Ezeike returns in 2022 for his fifth season at UCLA. This past year, he caught passes in games against Hawai'i, at Utah and at USC. Ezeike scored on a six-yard reception against the Utes. His long catch for the season came in the Bruin's win over the Trojans and went for 26 yards to set up a short scoring run by Dorian Thompson-Robinson on the next play. Ezeike has seen action in 36 games during a UCLA career which has seen him line up for action at special teams, wide receiver and tight end. His first career catch came on a nine-yard touchdown toss from Thompson-Robinson in a 2018 game at Oklahoma.

The award recipient is selected by a vote of the John Mackey Award Selection Committee. The committee will announce award semifinalists in November and the 2022 Mackey Award winner will be announced at The Home Depot College Football Awards Show in December. Established in 2000, the Mackey Award has been previously presented to one Bruin – Marcedes Lewis, in 2005.

The Bruins open the 2022 season with three straight non-conference home contests. The campaign begins on Sept. 3 against Bowling Green at Rose Bowl Stadium in a 11:30 a.m. PT kickoff that airs on Pac-12 Network. A Sept. 10 visit by Alabama State follows, with the Pac-12 Network-televised matchup slated for a 2 p.m. start.
