Five members of the Cal women's rowing team will be competing at the U-23 and U-19 World Championships in Italy this week.

BERKELEY – Five members of the Cal women's rowing team will travel to Varese, Italy to compete for their respective countries in this week's Under-23 and Under-19 World Rowing Championship at Lake Varese.

Sophomore Angela Szabo continues her busy summer rowing internationally; the native of Sarasota, Fla., just competed at the prestigious Henley Royal Regatta for the Golden Bears. She now heads to the U-23 championships where she will row in the bow seat for the coxed four for the United States. She also competed for the US in 2019.

Newcomers Minou Bouman, Lotta van Westreenen, Lily Pember, and Giulia Bosio will all be competing for their respective countries. Bouman and van Westreenen will be racing for the Netherlands, Pember will represent the United States, and Bosio will be competing for Italy at the U-23 Championships.

"Coach Martelli and I are excited to be here in Varese to support our U23 and U19 Golden Bears!" said head coach Al Acosta.  "Angela Szabo has had a busy summer going straight from Henley to the USA U23 camp and now back to Europe. Incoming freshmen Giulia Bosio will be representing Italy in the 4x. In the U19 events, incoming freshmen Golden Bears Lotta van Westreenen and Minou Bauman will represent The Netherlands in the 2x and 4x. From the Chicago Rowing Foundation, Lily Pember will represent the USA in the 8+. This is an excellent group of talented athletes that have a bright future ahead of them in Berkeley."

Bouman will make her debut for the Netherlands at the U-19 Championship. She will row in the quadruple sculls boat. Van Westreenen, the reigning Junior World Champion, will compete in the double sculls for the Netherlands. She was named as one of the "Rowers to Watch" at the U-19 Championships by WorldRowing.com.

Pember, a native of Chicago, Ill., will once again be competing for the United States in the eight boat. Pember served as an alternate at the 2021 World Junior Rowing Championships. She helped her boat win the eight at the 2022 USRowing Youth National Championships and the 2021 USRowing Summer National Championship.

Bosio will be rowing in the quadruple sculls for Italy. She competed for Italy in both the 2019 and 2021 Junior World Championships. Most recently, she helped Italy take second in the quadruple sculls in the 2021 Junior World Championships.

The World Championships will take place July 25-31 in Varese, Italy. Highlights and video of the event can be viewed at WorldRowing.com or by clicking here.
